Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Scandal

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
The distant hum of the hospital’s ventilation system seemed to amplify, rattling against Catherine’s ears like a roaring wind.
"My... my father?" Catherine repeated, her voice hollow, utterly stripped of emotion. "My father died when I was twelve. He was a postal worker in Boston!"
Alessandro didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the side table, poured himself a glass of water with a steady hand, and drank it slowly before turning back to face her.
"Your mother lied to you, Catherine," Alessandro said. "Your biological father is Arthur Pendelton—the Senior Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the secret silent partner of the Moretti crime syndicate."
Catherine felt her knees give out. She collapsed back onto the leather sofa, clutching Logan so tightly the little boy stirred in his sleep, murmuring incoherently before settling back against her chest.
"Arthur Pendelton?" Catherine whispered. "The man who appears on the news during high-profile federal corruption cases? That Arthur Pendelton?"
"The very same," Alessandro confirmed. "Twenty-five years ago, Arthur had a brief affair with your mother while he was a field agent in Boston. When she became pregnant, Arthur threatened to destroy her if she ever revealed his secret. He paid her a monthly stipend to keep her quiet and pretend her late husband was your father."
Alessandro took a step closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity.
"Two years ago, David uncovered a series of hidden wire transfers while auditing my family’s accounts," Alessandro continued. "He discovered that Arthur Pendelton was using federal seize-and-forfeit funds to launder money for the Moretti family through offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. David didn't know Arthur was your father. He only knew he had uncovered the biggest corruption scandal in FBI history."
Catherine’s head was spinning. She felt sick, her stomach twisting into painful knots. "So David went to the authorities?"
"David came to me," Alessandro corrected. "Because he knew that going to the FBI meant going straight into Pendelton’s trap. But before we could secure the evidence, Pendelton realized his paper trail had been compromised. He tracked the breach back to David. He knew David was married to his illegitimate daughter, but Pendelton didn't care. To a man like Arthur Pendelton, power is the only family that matters."
Alessandro reached out, his long, scarred fingers gently touching the corner of the sofa near Logan’s head.
"Pendelton hired the Moretti hit squad to run David off the road," Alessandro explained. "I had my men monitoring David's car that night. We pulled him from the burning wreckage three minutes before the gas tank exploded. His face was burned, his leg shattered. I knew that if Pendelton found out David survived, he would come after you and Logan to force David out of hiding."
"So you faked his death," Catherine breathed, the horror of the reality settling into her bones. "You staged the crash... you put a unidentified body in that car..."
"A john doe from the county morgue whose dental records were altered by my medical contacts," Alessandro admitted without a hint of remorse. "I buried that casket. I paid for the funeral. And I forced David to sign a non-contact agreement before I shipped him across the border to Canada under a false passport."
"You forced him?" Catherine snapped, her grief suddenly turning into a sharp, blazing fury. "You kept a husband from his wife! You kept a father from his son!"
"I kept him ALIVE!" Alessandro roared, his dark voice booming off the walls of the VIP suite.
The sheer force of his tone made Logan startle awake. The little boy rubbed his eyes, looking up at the towering man with wide, innocent hazel eyes.
Alessandro instantly caught himself. He closed his eyes, taking a long, slow breath to regain his composure. When he opened them again, the lethal rage was gone, replaced by a strange, quiet vulnerability.
"If David had come back to you, Catherine," Alessandro said softly, looking down at the young boy, "Pendelton would have killed all three of you. The only reason you and Logan have been allowed to live a quiet life in Baltimore for the past two years is because Pendelton believes the threat to his empire died on I-95."
Logan looked up at Alessandro, then reached out his tiny hand, pointing at the dark red stain soaking through Alessandro’s silk shirt near his ribs.
"Mr. Cold Man, you're bleeding again," Logan said innocently.
Alessandro looked down at his shirt, where his stitches were beginning to yield under the stress of his raised voice. A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of his lips—a look so entirely out of place on the ruthless crime boss's face that it rendered Catherine speechless.
"It seems I am, little man," Alessandro said softly to Logan.
At that moment, the heavy door to the suite burst open.
Marco rushed in, his face pale, holding a tactical radio against his ear. "Boss! We have a breach! Federal agents just hit the ground floor security gate! They have a military-grade warrant signed directly by Deputy Director Pendelton!"
Catherine gasped, pulling Logan against her chest as she stood up. "Pendelton? Here?"
Alessandro didn't panic. His eyes hardened into pure, lethal steel. He walked over to a hidden wall panel behind a painting, punched in a six-digit code, and pulled out a sleek black briefcase along with two suppressed handguns.
"He knows I survived the ambush tonight," Alessandro said calmly, tossing one of the weapons to Marco. "And he knows I have the drive David gave me two years ago. Pendelton isn't here to arrest me, Marco. He’s here to clean house."
Alessandro turned to Catherine, reaching out his large hand.
"You have two choices, Catherine," Alessandro said, his voice cold, steady, and absolute. "You can stay here, let my legal team try to protect you, and hope your biological father shows you mercy when he finds out you know the truth... or you come with me, and we go get your husband back."

Catherine looked at the door, where the distant sound of breaking glass and shouting men echoed up the stairwell. Then she looked at the man who had died and come back to life in front of her son.
She took Alessandro’s hand.
