Chapter 3 - The Escape from Johns Hopkins

The service elevator descended into the dark, damp belly of the hospital's subterranean utility tunnels.
The air down here was thick with the smell of diesel, hot steam, and old concrete. Overhead, thick red pipes hummed with high-pressure steam, casting long, eerie shadows across the narrow corridor.
Alessandro walked ahead, a suppressed firearm held low at his side, his movements fluid and silent malgré the dark blood stain continuing to spread across his ribcage. Marco brought up the rear, his massive frame sweeping his weapon left and right, covering every dark alcove.
Catherine walked in the middle, carrying Logan, who was clinging to her neck like a baby monkey.
"Where are we going?" Catherine whispered frantically over the heavy thudding of her own heart. "The entire hospital is surrounded by federal agents!"
"Pendelton controls the front gates and the main exits," Alessandro explained without slowing his pace. "He doesn't control the old civil defense tunnels built beneath the East Baltimore medical complex in the 1950s. They lead directly into the basement of a abandoned bakery three blocks away."
Suddenly, a loud BANG echoed down the tunnel behind them.
"They're through the heavy doors!" Marco grunted, dropping to one knee and raising his weapon toward the dark corridor they had just left. "Boss, taking the kid and the girl through the maintenance hatch is going to slow us down. Federal tactical teams carry night-vision optics."
Alessandro stopped near a heavy steel door marked DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE. He reached into his coat, pulled out a small electronic jammer, and slapped it against the magnetic lock panel.
"Marco, take the secondary tunnel toward the harbor," Alessandro ordered. "Draw their main tactical team toward the water. I’ll take Catherine and the boy to the safe house in Canton."
Marco grinned—a terrifying, scarred grimace. "Consider it done, boss. Don't bleed to death before I get back."
Without another word, the giant security chief turned and sprinted down a branching dark corridor, deliberately kicking over a metal trash bin to make as much noise as possible.
"This way! Quickly!" Alessandro urged, pushing open the heavy steel door.
They scrambled into a narrow, vertical maintenance shaft. A rusted iron ladder stretched upward into the darkness.
"I can't climb that while holding Logan!" Catherine gasped, looking up at the endless ladder in terror.
Alessandro didn't argue. He pulled a thick leather tactical strap from his briefcase, wrapped it securely around his own chest, and lifted Logan onto his back. "Hold onto my neck tightly, little man. Like a backpack."
"Like Captain Bear!" Logan squeaked, wrapping his arms around the mob boss's neck without a second's hesitation.
Alessandro looked at Catherine. "Climb right behind me. If you slip, I catch you."
For the next ten agonizing minutes, they ascended the rusted ladder. Every rung Alessandro climbed elicited a sharp, stifled gasp of pain from his lips as his torn stitches strained against his body weight. Sweat poured off his forehead, dripping down his neck, but he didn't stop. He didn't slow down. He climbed with a terrifying, unyielding willpower that awed Catherine.
Finally, Alessandro kicked open a heavy iron grate at the top of the shaft.
They emerged into the dark, flour-dusted basement of an abandoned industrial bakery. The smell of yeast and damp brick filled the cold night air.
Waiting in the shadows of the bakery was a matte-black armored SUV with blacked-out windows. A young driver in a black suit immediately stepped out, opening the rear door.
"Boss! Thank God," the driver gasped. "We heard the radio chatter from the hospital."
"Drive," Alessandro rasped, sliding into the back seat and gently lowering Logan off his back onto the plush leather upholstery.
Catherine scrambled in beside them, immediately pulling Logan into her lap.
The heavy SUV accelerated smoothly, slipping out of the alleyway into the dark, rain-slicked streets of East Baltimore just as three black federal sedans with flashing red-and-blue lights roared past in the opposite direction toward the hospital.
Catherine collapsed against the leather seat, her entire body shaking uncontrollably. She looked at Alessandro, who was leaning his head back against the headrest, his eyes closed, his breathing shallow and rapid.
"You're going into shock," Catherine said, her medical training instantly taking over. She reached out, pressing two fingers against his neck to check his carotid pulse. It was fast and thready. "You need a trauma surgeon right now!"
Alessandro opened one dark eye, looking at her hand against his neck.
"My private doctor... is waiting at the safe house," Alessandro murmured faintly. "Don't worry... nurse. I'm not... allowed to die tonight."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key attached to a leather strap. He held it out to her.
"What is this?" Catherine asked.
"The key... to a safety deposit box... at the First Bank of Montreal," Alessandro whispered, his eyes fluttering shut. "David... put the master encryption drive there. It contains... every bank account, every phone recording, every murder order... Arthur Pendelton ever issued."
Catherine held the cold brass key in her palm.
"Why are you giving this to me?" she asked, her voice cracking.
May you like
Alessandro opened his eyes fully, staring into hers with an intensity that burned through the dark interior of the SUV.
"Because if I don't survive tonight, Catherine..." Alessandro said, "you are the only person left alive... who can save your husband."
