Chapter 9 - LESSONS OF THE HEART

Six months later.

The seasons shifted, bringing a warm, golden autumn to the hills of the Sullivan estate.

Anne’s health was completely restored. She had used her passion for textiles and design to launch The Luna Foundation—a charity fully funded by Matthew that provided housing, vocational training, and legal protection for single mothers and underprivileged children in the city.

The cardboard box of dolls no longer sat in a dark closet.

Instead, Matthew had commissioned a custom, glass-enclosed oak display case built right into the main living room of their home. Inside it, sitting on velvet cushions, were the golden-haired doll, the plastic doll in the blue dress, the two cracked teacups, the pink brush, the letter-bead bracelet, and Luna, the handmade rag doll.

It served as a permanent reminder of the day love saved their family.

One Saturday afternoon, Matthew sat on the back porch, watching Sarah run across the lawn with her new puppy. Anne came out, holding two mugs of hot cider, and sat down beside him, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"She's so happy, Matthew," Anne whispered, watching Sarah’s laughter float through the crisp air.

"We all are," Matthew said, wrapping his arm around her waist, kissing her temple. "I spoke to our legal team today. The paperwork for Sarah’s formal adoption of the Sullivan name is complete. And Richard’s final appeal for trust access was denied by the courts. He has relocated permanently to Florida."

Anne sighed softly, letting go of the past completely. "He can't hurt us anymore."

"No one can," Matthew promised.

Sarah came running up the porch steps, her face flushed red from playing, holding a small wooden box in her hands.

"Look, Dad! Look what I made in art class today!" Sarah beamed, holding up a small painted box decorated with glitter and heart stickers.

Matthew took the box gently, admiring the messy, beautiful artwork. "It's wonderful, Sarah. What is it for?"

Sarah looked up at them, her almond eyes shining with pure joy.

"It's a new box," Sarah announced proudly. "For when we need to save someone else."

Matthew felt a lump rise in his throat. He pulled Sarah onto his lap, hugging her tight, while Anne wrapped her arms around both of them.
