Chapter 4 - THE CONFRONTATION

By midnight, the news of Matthew Sullivan’s abrupt departure from the high-society foundation dinner had stirred whispers among the city's elite.

More alarmingly, Richard Sullivan—Matthew’s ruthless, eighty-year-old father—had received a frantic call from his bank informing him that his primary credit lines had been temporarily suspended under Matthew's executive authority.

Furious, Richard drove straight to Mercy General Hospital, flanked by two private security guards. He marched down the ICU corridor, his gold-topped cane clicking loudly against the polished floor, expecting to find his son making a foolish business mistake.

When Richard pushed open the door to the VIP suite, he stopped short.

Matthew was standing near the window, gazing out at the rainy city skyline. Sarah was tucked safely in a small cot in the corner of the room, fast asleep under a warm blanket. Anne lay motionless on the bed.

"Matthew!" Richard barked in a harsh whisper. "What is the meaning of this spectacle? You froze the foundation accounts! Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is for our family?"

Matthew didn't turn around immediately. He slowly poured a glass of water from a pitcher, drank a sip, and then turned to face his father.

His eyes were colder than ice.

"Lower your voice, Richard," Matthew said, his tone containing an authority so absolute that even the elder Sullivan hesitated. "You are in the presence of my family."

Richard frowned, looking over at the bed. He squinted at Anne’s pale face, and then a slow, sinister realization dawned on him.

"Her?" Richard sneered, pointing his cane toward the bed. "The housekeeper's girl? You are disrupting our corporate holdings over her again? I thought I dealt with this pathetic distraction thirty years ago!"

Matthew walked slowly across the room until he was standing inches from his father.

"You forged letters," Matthew said softly, every word laced with lethal precision. "You lied to her. You told her I abandoned her. You manufactured legal documents to keep us apart."

Richard lifted his chin arrogantly. "I saved you from ruining the Sullivan name! You were destined to lead a global empire, Matthew! You couldn't marry a girl who cleaned toilets for a living!"

"She was worth ten of you," Matthew hissed. "And while you were busy preserving your precious 'name,' you robbed me of thirty years with the woman I loved."

Matthew pointed toward the small cot in the corner where Sarah lay sleeping.

"Look at her," Matthew commanded.

Richard glanced over, his brow furrowing. "Who is that?"

"That is Sarah," Matthew said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "She is five years old. She is Anne's daughter. And she is my daughter. My blood. Your granddaughter."

Richard blinked, genuine shock flickering across his weathered face. "Your... daughter?"

"She was carrying a cardboard box of cheap toys through this hospital today, offering them to doctors to save her mother's life," Matthew said, tears of fury glinting in his eyes. "Because you left them with nothing."

Richard swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure. "Matthew... listen to me. We can handle this quietly. A discrete trust fund... a quiet settlement..."

"Get out," Matthew said quietly.

"Matthew, don't be foolish—"

"Get out of this hospital!" Matthew roared in a sharp, quiet fury that made the security guards outside step back. "If you ever come near Anne, near Sarah, or near me again, I will release every piece of corporate fraud you committed during your tenure as chairman. I will strip you of every asset, every title, and every penny you possess. You are dead to us, Richard."

May you like

Richard stared at his son, realizing for the first time in his life that he had lost completely. He backed out of the room slowly, his cane trembling against the floor, before turning and fleeing down the corridor.

Matthew closed the door quietly, leaning his head against the wood, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
