Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE BROKEN

Over the next three weeks, Mercy General Hospital's VIP suite became a place of healing and quiet joy.
Under the care of the world's best medical team, Anne recovered rapidly. Her internal injuries healed, her strength returned, and the color came back to her cheeks.
For Sarah, those three weeks were nothing short of magical.
Matthew spent every single day at the hospital. He moved his executive office to a suite down the hall, conducting global business meetings via video calls, but returning to Anne’s room every hour. He brought Sarah storybooks, coloring sets, and warm meals. He sat on the floor with her, playing pretend tea parties using the two cracked plastic cups from her cardboard box, taking tiny imaginary sips while making Sarah burst into delighted giggles.
One evening, as Sarah lay sleeping on the daybed in the room, Anne sat up in her bed, watching Matthew organize Sarah's toys.
"You don't have to do all of this, Matthew," Anne said softly.
Matthew looked up, setting down a toy hairbrush. "What do you mean?"
"I know you feel guilty about the past," Anne said quietly, her voice tinged with lingering vulnerability. "And I know you want to provide for Sarah. But you don't have to buy us luxury. We have lived simply for a long time."
Matthew walked over and sat on the edge of her bed. He took her hand, looking deeply into her eyes.
"Anne, this isn't about guilt," he said earnestly. "The moment I saw Sarah holding that cardboard box, offering everything she owned in the world just to keep you alive, I saw the soul of the woman I loved thirty years ago. I love Sarah because she is our daughter. And I love you because my heart never belonged to anyone else."
Anne looked at him, her eyes searching his face, looking for any trace of doubt. She found none—only absolute, steady devotion.
"I was so scared, Matthew," Anne confessed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "When I found out I was pregnant five years ago, after seeing you at that train station, I thought about reaching out. But I was so afraid your family would take her away from me because I was poor."

"No one will ever take either of you away from me again," Matthew vowed, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss onto her lips.
When he pulled back, Anne smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that erased thirty years of sorrow in an instant.
