Chapter 6 - Blood Across the Marble

Z
The explosive roar of automatic gunfire shattered the tranquility of the Reyes estate, echoing across the vast manicured grounds like rolling thunder. Through the reinforced steel security monitors inside the underground panic vault, Elena watched in horrified fascination as the battle unfolded on the front lawn.
Flashing headlights illuminated the torrential rain outside. Black SUVs bearing the crest of the Moretti crime family had breached the iron gates, their tires tearing through the pristine grass. Muzzle flashes lit up the darkness in rapid, violent strobes.
"Sit down, Elena, please," Rosalind urged, her voice trembling slightly as she poured hot chamomile tea with shaking hands. "Damian has survived three assassination attempts before this. Marcus and the perimeter team know exactly what they are doing."
Elena couldn't sit. She paced the length of the vault, her eyes glued to the center monitor.
On the grand exterior portico, standing beneath the colossal marble pillars of the estate, was Damian Reyes. He stood completely exposed to the storm, yet moved with terrifying, lethal grace. Every shot from his weapon was deliberate, dropping Moretti’s advancing gunmen before they could even cross the fountain courtyard. Marcus and a dozen elite tactical guards flanked the wings, executing a textbook crossfire maneuver that funneled the attackers into a deadly kill zone.
Within seven minutes, the gunfire outside began to sputter and die out.
The heavy thud of engines retreating in panic hummed through the concrete walls. Elena let out a ragged breath she hadn't realized she was holding, pressing her trembling hands against the cool metal console.
"See?" Rosalind sighed with immense relief. "The master always prevails."
Suddenly, the red emergency alarm on the vault console began to flash frantically. An auxiliary screen flickered to life, showing the rear service corridor just outside the kitchen pantry—a blind spot beneath the western terrace.
Two men in black tactical gear were creeping through the shattered glass of the conservatory door. One of them was Salvatore Moretti himself—a burly, silver-haired mobster with a jagged scar across his nose, clutching a sawed-off shotgun.
"He bypassed the front lawn," Elena gasped, her blood running cold. "He came through the service tunnels. He's heading toward the central hall!"
"Dear Lord in heaven," Rosalind whispered, clutching her chest. "The master is still on the front lawn clearing the driveway. He doesn't know Moretti slipped inside."
Elena looked at the heavy steel door of the panic vault. The locking mechanism was controlled by a simple hydraulic lever on the inside wall. If she stayed in the vault, she was completely safe. The reinforced titanium door could withstand a military-grade explosive.
But Damian was walking back into the grand foyer right now, unaware of the ambusher hiding behind the dining room archway.
"Elena, what are you doing?" Rosalind screamed as Elena lunged for the hydraulic lever.
"He's going to walk straight into a trap!" Elena yelled over her shoulder.
"You can't go out there! You'll be killed!"
"I spent my whole life letting other people get hurt for me," Elena shouted, pulling the heavy lever with all her strength. "Not tonight!"
The hydraulic seals hissed open with a deafening rush of air. Elena slipped through the heavy door before Rosalind could grab her, sprinting up the narrow spiral stone staircase that led to the ground floor.
The main hallway was dark, filled with the sharp smell of cordite and rain. Elena kicked off her soft slippers, moving silently in her bare feet across the cold hardwood floor. She slipped past the pantry, her heart beating like a trapped bird inside her ribcage.
Up ahead, through the carved archway of the formal dining room, she saw the shadow of Salvatore Moretti raised against the wall. He was crouching behind the ten-foot grandfather clock, raising his shotgun toward the grand foyer doors where Damian’s heavy footsteps were approaching.
Damian pushed the front doors open, his gun lowered by his side, rain dripping from his dark hair onto the marble floor. "Marcus, secure the western perimeter—"
"Damian, look out!" Elena screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing herself into the dining room.
Moretti spun around in surprise, his shotgun swinging toward Elena. That split-second distraction was all Damian Reyes needed.
Damian moved like a striking viper. He lunged forward, closing the fifteen-foot gap in the blink of an eye. His left hand slammed down on the barrel of Moretti's shotgun, redirecting the blast into the ceiling plaster with an ear-splitting boom. With his right hand, Damian drove the steel butt of his pistol directly into Moretti's temple.
The mob boss collapsed onto the dining room floor with a wet, heavy thud, unconscious before he hit the Persian rug.
Damian stood over the fallen boss, his chest heaving, rain soaking through his ruined shirt. He kicked the shotgun across the floor, then turned his gaze toward Elena, who stood shaking against the wall, covered in plaster dust.
For five agonizing seconds, neither of them moved. The mansion was completely silent except for the drumming rain outside and their ragged breathing.
Damian walked toward her, his boots crunching over shattered glass. His eyes were wide with a mixture of raw fury and sheer, unadulterated awe. He stopped inches from her, his large hands reaching out to grip her shoulders, pulling her against his chest with fierce, crushing intensity.
"You reckless, beautiful fool," Damian growled into her hair, his voice shaking with an emotion he had never shown in his entire life. "You could have died."

Elena buried her face in his wet, ruined shirt, her fingers clutching his waist as she wept tears of pure adrenaline and relief. "I couldn't let him shoot you."
Damian pulled back slightly, his intense dark eyes searching her face. Slowly, reverently, he cupped her cheek with his blood-stained hand, ignoring the dirt and grime, and pressed his lips against hers in a fierce, breathless kiss that sealed their fates forever.
