Chapter 4 - A Cage of Gilded Silk

Z

The morning sun filtered through the grand stained-glass dome of the Reyes manor, casting geometric patterns of amber, emerald, and sapphire across the sweeping marble staircase. Elena Cruz stood in the grand foyer, clutching a brass polish cloth in one hand and a bucket of cleaning solvent in the other.

Something felt terribly wrong.

Usually, the estate was filled with the quiet bustle of the morning staff—the kitchen prep cooks chopping herbs, the groundskeepers trimming the courtyard ivy, Rosalind doing her morning inventory walk. But today, the entire ground floor was shrouded in an eerie, reverent stillness.

"Elena, my dear," Rosalind's voice echoed softly from the top of the grand staircase.

Elena looked up, her heart doing a nervous flip. Rosalind was dressed not in her working apron, but in a tailored black skirt suit. Beside her stood Marcus Vance, holding two large, brand-new leather luggage bags.

"Mrs. Marsh?" Elena stepped forward, wiping her hands nervously on her apron. "Is... is there a problem with the west wing? I haven't finished dusting the library yet, but I can—"

"You won't be dusting the library today, Elena," Rosalind said gently as she descended the stairs. Her eyes were warm, but there was an underlying gravity that made Elena’s stomach drop. "In fact, your duties as domestic staff have been officially concluded."

Panic seized Elena's chest like an iron band. Her knees nearly buckled. "I'm fired? Please, Mrs. Marsh, what did I do? If it’s about yesterday—if I was too slow with Mr. Reyes's tray—I swear I can work faster! I need this job. I have rent to pay, and Hector—"

"Hector is gone, Elena," a deep, commanding voice resounded through the foyer.

Elena gasped, spinning around.

Damian Reyes walked out of his private study. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal-grey suit with an open-collared white shirt, looking relaxed yet radiating an undeniable aura of absolute control. His piercing gaze settled on Elena, taking in her wide, frightened eyes, her pale skin, and the tremor running through her slender frame.

"What... what do you mean, Hector is gone?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling.

"He boarded a transcontinental bus to the Southwest three hours ago," Damian said plainly, walking toward her with slow, measured steps. "He had accumulated debts with dangerous men in this city. Debts he could not pay. I settled his accounts on the strict condition that he never return to Chicago. He accepted the terms with great enthusiasm."

Elena felt the world tilting beneath her feet. The breath left her lungs in a sharp gasp. "You... you paid his debts? Why would you do that? How do you even know about Hector?"

"Because you were wearing his fingerprints on your wrists yesterday morning," Damian said, stopping just two feet in front of her. The proximity was overwhelming; he smelled of cedarwood, rich tobacco, and expensive cologne. "And nobody who works in this house is permitted to suffer."

"You shouldn't have done that," Elena choked out, tears of humiliation and panic springing to her eyes. She backed away a step, shaking her head. "You don't know him! If he finds out—if he thinks I asked you for help—"

"He knows better than to think anything at all," Damian interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. "The apartment on 19th Street has been cleared. Your personal belongings, your clothes, and your mother's keepsakes are already in those bags Marcus is holding."

Elena stared at the luggage, then back at Damian, horror dawning over her features. "You went into my home?"

"I secured your safety," Damian corrected softly. "From this moment forward, you will reside here, on the third floor of the east wing. You will have your own private suite, your own wardrobe, and a private security detail whenever you leave the estate grounds."

"No," Elena said, her voice rising with sudden, desperate defiance. "No! You can't do this! I am an employee, Mr. Reyes. You can't just buy my life! You can't buy my cousin off and lock me in your house like... like some stray pet you picked up off the street!"

Rosalind stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Elena's shoulder. "Elena, child, listen to reason—"

"I won't!" Elena pulled away, her chest heaving as she glared at Damian. "I know who you are. People in Pilsen whisper about the Reyes family. They say your father ran the docks with an iron fist, and they say you run the entire city from the shadows! You think you can control everyone because you have millions of dollars? I don't want your money! I don't want your suite! I want to leave!"

She turned toward the heavy mahogany front doors and took two furious strides before Marcus shifted his massive frame, blocking the exit without raising a finger.

Elena stopped, her fists clenching at her sides. She turned back to face Damian, her breathing ragged, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "Let me go."

Damian didn't look angry. If anything, the fire in her eyes seemed to intrigue him. He walked over to her, his expression unreadable, and stopped inches away.

"You are free to walk out those doors, Elena," Damian said quietly, his voice low and hypnotic. "Marcus will step aside right now if you ask. But understand this: without this house, you have no home, no references, no money, and Salvatore Moretti’s enforcers are currently scouring the Lower West Side looking for anyone connected to Hector Cruz. If you walk out that door, you will be in an unmarked van by nightfall."

Elena looked into his dark eyes, searching for a lie, but found only cold, unflinching reality.

"Stay," Damian murmured, his voice softening into something resembling tenderness. "Not as a maid. Not as a prisoner. But as my guest. Let me give you the peace you have spent your entire life begging for."

Elena’s knees finally gave out. She didn't fall to the floor; Damian’s strong hands caught her by the forearms, holding her steady with effortless strength. For the first time in years, she felt the warmth of someone holding her up instead of pushing her down.

"Why?" she whispered against his chest, her defenses crumbling into exhaustion. "Why do you care?"

Damian looked down at her, his jaw tightening slightly. "Because under my roof, you belong to me. And nobody destroys what is mine."
