Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

Ten years later.

The grand courtyard of the Moretti estate was lit by thousands of fairy lights strung through the ancient oak trees.

It was a warm June evening, and the grounds were filled with music, laughter, and guests gathered to celebrate two major milestones: Ethan’s graduation from Columbia University with top honors in law, and Lily’s entrance into a prestigious performing arts academy.

Eighteen-year-old Ethan stood near the stone fountain, wearing a sharp dark suit, chatting confidently with a group of university professors and family friends. Beside him stood sixteen-year-old Lily, looking stunning in an emerald green evening gown, her bright eyes laughing as she showed her little brother Leo—now a energetic twelve-year-old—a video on her phone.

On the upper terrace, fifty-two-year-old Dominic Moretti stood with his arm wrapped around Anna’s waist.

Dominic’s hair had silvered at the temples, giving him a distinguished, noble appearance, while Anna looked as radiant and graceful as ever in an elegant navy gown.

"Look at them, Dominic," Anna whispered, resting her head against his shoulder. "They turned out so wonderful."

Dominic looked down at his family, a deep, profound sense of contentment warming his chest.

"They did," Dominic agreed softly. "Ethan is going to be a far better man than I ever was. He’s going to use the law to protect people, not power."

"He learned that from you," Anna said, looking up into his eyes. "You showed him what real strength looks like."

Dominic turned her gently in his arms, looking down into the eyes of the woman who had transformed his world sixteen years ago.

"No, Anna," Dominic said quietly, his voice filled with deep emotion. "You and Lily showed us both. You brought life back into this house when it was nothing but a cold tomb of grief and violence."

Below the terrace, Ethan looked up and spotted his parents. He raised his glass in a silent toast, his face shining with pride and love. Beside him, Lily waved enthusiastically, her laughter carrying across the lawn.

Dominic raised his glass in return, then looked down at Anna.

"I made a promise to a three-year-old girl a long time ago," Dominic murmured, brushing his thumb gently across Anna’s lips. "I promised her she would be safe. That we would always protect each other."

"And you kept that promise, Dominic," Anna smiled, leaning up to kiss him warmly under the starry night sky. "Every single day."

Around them, the music played softly, the lights glittered like stars in the oak trees, and the sound of their children’s laughter filled the night—a sweet, eternal song of a family forged not by blood alone, but by love, courage, and a promise that would never be broken.
