Chapter 8 - A New Beginning

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Westchester, turning the estate grounds into a vibrant tapestry of blooming cherry blossoms, green lawns, and fragrant white roses.
The grand ballroom—the very room where the terrifying incident had occurred half a year earlier—was once again filled with light and music. But today, the atmosphere was entirely different.
There were no stern mob bosses lurking near the pillars, no tense security guards checking food plates, and no quiet murmurs of corporate politics.
Today was a celebration.
A massive banner hung above the French doors: HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY, LILY!
Long tables were set up across the marble floor, covered in pink tablecloths, fresh flowers, and towers of cupcakes. Children from Ethan’s school, along with the families of the estate's staff, were running around playing games, their laughter echoing off the high ceilings.
At the center table sat a massive, beautiful four-tier birthday cake decorated with pink frosting, edible glitter, and a sugar sculpture of a winged pony.
Anna stood near the entrance, wearing an elegant knee-length lavender dress, watching the party with tears of joy shining in her eyes.
Dominic stepped up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly on her shoulder.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?" Dominic whispered near her ear.
Anna smiled, turning her head to press a quick kiss to his cheek. They had been married two months earlier in a small, private ceremony on the estate grounds—a quiet affair attended only by close friends, staff, and the children.
"I'm happier than I've ever been," Anna admitted softly. "Look at them."
Across the room, Ethan was patiently helping Lily wear a paper birthday crown, while Dr. Harris—now a regular family friend—was performing a magic trick for a group of wide-eyed kids near the ice cream station.
"Speech! Speech!" Marco called out from the side table, holding up a glass of sparkling cider. The staff and guests immediately clapped and cheered in agreement.
Dominic laughed, squeezing Anna’s hand, and walked toward the cake table. The room gradually fell quiet as the feared head of the Moretti family stood before his guests, holding a small silver microphone.
"Thank you, everyone, for coming today," Dominic began, his voice warm and resonant. "Four years ago, this house was a quiet, empty place. I thought security walls and guard details were enough to protect the things that mattered."
He looked at Ethan, who smiled up at him proudly, and then at Lily, who was busy licking pink frosting off her thumb.
"I was wrong," Dominic continued, his gaze returning to Anna. "What protects a family isn't steel or stone. It's love. It's courage. And sometimes, it’s a three-year-old girl who isn't afraid to speak up when something is wrong."
The crowd erupted into applause and fond laughter. Lily beamed, waving her frosted hand at the guests like a tiny royal figure.
"So today," Dominic smiled, "we eat cake!"

Lily immediately raised both hands in the air. "Yay! No bad powder!"
Laughter washed over the ballroom as Dominic leaned down and helped Lily blow out the four pink candles on her cake.
