Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Moretti

By 8:00 AM, the rain had cleared, leaving the Hudson Valley bathed in a pale, fragile winter sunlight.

The news of Victor Vance’s arrest and the collapse of his financial network had sent shockwaves through the New York underworld. However, the cornered Moretti syndicate—realizing their primary informant had been captured—was now desperate and erratic.

I had moved Lily to the master suite in the West Wing, where three heavily armed guards posted outside the door.

I was packing Lily’s favorite books into a small leather bag when Alessandro walked into the room. He had showered and changed into a crisp charcoal suit, though the dark circles under his eyes revealed he hadn't slept a single minute.

"You're still packing," Alessandro observed quietly, standing near the doorway.

"I need to take Lily away from this estate, Alessandro," I replied without looking up. "It isn't safe here right now, and she needs a quiet place to heal."

"Clara, please," Alessandro pleaded softly, walking closer. "The estate is locked down. Federal marshals are setting up a perimeter around the property as we speak. If you leave now, you'll be vulnerable."

"Vulnerable to whom?" I turned to face him, my arms folded across my chest. "To the people trying to hurt your business, or to the man who was ready to throw me out on the street twelve hours ago?"

Alessandro looked down, accepting the sting of my words without defending himself.

"I made a catastrophic mistake," he said, his voice raw with emotion. "I let my paranoia as a syndicate leader blind me to the truth of the woman I love. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you and Lily, Clara. Just... don't go where I can't protect you."

Before I could answer, the estate’s emergency perimeter alarm began to chime—a low, rhythmic pulse that echoed through the house speakers.

“WARNING: PERIMETER BREACH IN SECTOR 4 — SOUTH GATEHOUSE.”

Alessandro’s radio clicked on instantly with Dominic’s tense voice: "Boss! Two armored vans just rammed the south gates! It's Moretti’s mercs—they know Victor is inside, and they're trying to breach the East Wing before the federal marshals arrive!"

Alessandro pulled a sleek black handgun from his shoulder holster, his eyes snapping to mine with fierce, protective authority.

"Stay in this room with Lily," Alessandro ordered, his voice echoing with absolute command. "Lock the steel safety shutters. Do not open this door for anyone except me or Dominic."

"Alessandro—" I gasped, my anger suddenly dissolving into a spike of pure terror.

He stepped forward, cupped my face gently in his large, warm hand, and pressed a firm, lingering kiss onto my forehead.

"I love you, Clara," he whispered against my skin. "And I will burn this entire valley to the ground before I let anyone hurt you or our daughter."
