Chapter 2 - The Trap Springs Shut

The silence in the library was so intense that the sound of the rain outside seemed to deafen the room.

Victor stood frozen, staring at the screen where his own face was caught in crystal-clear four-kilapixel resolution.

"Boss..." Victor stammered, taking an involuntary step back toward the hallway door. "That... that feed is a deepfake! The Moretti family must have tampered with your network!"

"Dominic," Alessandro said softly, without raising his voice.

From the shadows behind the library curtains, Dominic—Alessandro’s silent, towering personal bodyguard and lifelong confidant—stepped out, holding a heavy suppressed pistol trained directly on Victor’s chest. The two guards who had entered with Victor immediately unholstered their weapons and aimed them at their former chief.

"You've been selling routes to the Moretti family for eighteen months, Victor," Alessandro said, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. "I suspected a leak in senior management, but I couldn't believe it was you. You framed Clara because you knew she was starting to audit the household vendor invoices you were overcharging."

"Alessandro, listen to me!" Victor panicked, his hands flying up into the air. "I saved your life in Chicago five years ago! You owe me!"

"I paid you five million dollars and gave you authority over my estate for that night in Chicago," Alessandro replied coldly, stepping toward him. "And you repaid me by terrorizing a three-year-old child and trying to destroy the woman who holds this house together."

Alessandro gestured to Dominic. "Take him down to the wine cellar vault. Secure his devices, freeze his accounts, and call Federal Prosecutor Miller. I want Victor handed over to the Department of Justice by noon, along with every piece of evidence we have on the Morettis."

"You can't do this to me!" Victor screamed as Dominic and the guards dragged him kicking and screaming down the grand corridor. "You'll regret this, Romano! The Morettis know where she lives!"

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off Victor’s shouts.

The library returned to quietness, save for the crackle of the fireplace logs and the soft, rhythmic breathing of my daughter in my arms.

Alessandro turned around slowly. He looked exhausted, his shoulders slumped beneath the weight of his own terrible error.

He walked over to where I sat, dropping heavily onto his knees right in front of my chair.

"Clara," he whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up at me. "I... I don't know how to ask for your forgiveness."

I squeezed Lily closer to my chest, looking down at the man who had held absolute power over my life for four years.

"You trusted a video file and a lie over my character, Alessandro," I said, my voice tight with unbearable pain. "You let my daughter believe she was a burden. You can lock Victor in a cell, but you can't undo the fear you put into her heart tonight."

Alessandro closed his eyes, bowing his head until his forehead rested against the edge of my knees, weeping silently in the dark library.
