Chapter 10 - The Reckoning in Gold and Silk

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, champagne towers, and five hundred of New York’s most powerful people.

Don Salvatore Moretti stood near the center stage, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, laughing casually with the Police Commissioner and a senior U.S. Senator. He was in his element—the supreme puppet master of the city, revered, feared, and untouchable.

Then the massive double mahogany doors at the back of the room swung open.

The hum of five hundred conversations slowly died down, starting from the back tables and spreading like a wave toward the stage.

Damian Caruso walked into the room.

He walked with the calm, terrifying elegance of a predator entering his own territory. Beside him, Elena glided across the polished floor, her head held high, her emerald dress catching the light of the chandeliers.

Salvatore’s champagne glass froze inches from his lips. His blue eyes bulged in absolute shock.

They're dead, Salvatore thought frantically. My hit squad reported the G-Wagon was blown off the bridge into the river!

Damian didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at the security guards reaching under their jackets. His eyes were locked entirely on Salvatore.

"Damian..." the Police Commissioner stammered, looking confused. "We... we were told you had a sudden medical emergency tonight—"

"I’m feeling quite well, Commissioner," Damian’s voice carried effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "In fact, I’ve never seen things more clearly."

Salvatore quickly recovered, a dark sneer returning to his face as he stepped forward, raising his hands. "Damian, my boy! You shouldn't be here. Guards, please escort Mr. Caruso and his... companion... to the private suite upstairs."

Six heavy security men in black suits stepped out from the crowd, moving to surround Damian and Elena.

"Don't touch them," a cold voice echoed over the house speakers.

Suddenly, every high-definition screen in the ballroom—the massive displays showing the Moretti Foundation logo—flickered, went black, and hummed to life.

A audio file began playing over the main sound system.

"...It was an emergency C-section! Your wife's baby did die in the womb, three hours before she reached the hospital! Salvatore knew it! He ordered me to find a healthy baby born that same night... and swap the records! Rosa Moretti was heavily in debt to Salvatore's illegal gambling den..."

Dr. Vance’s terrified, weeping confession boomed across the Grand Ballroom in crystal-clear audio.

Gasps erupted from the crowd. The Police Commissioner stepped back from Salvatore as if the old man had suddenly caught fire. The U.S. Senator’s face turned white, and he immediately ducked behind his security detail.

"Shut it off! SHUT IT OFF!" Salvatore screamed, his face turning a violent shade of purple as he pointed his silver cane at the sound booth.

The screens shifted.

Official St. Agnes birth certificates flashed up—showing Elena Moretti’s name as the biological mother of Sofia, followed by the bank transfers showing three million dollars flowing from Salvatore’s dummy corporations into offshore accounts linked to Dr. Vance.

The room erupted into total chaos. Paparazzi cameras began flashing frantically like strobe lights. Reporters pulled out tape recorders.

Salvatore looked around the room, seeing his reputation, his legacy, and his immunity dissolve into thin air in front of the entire city.

"You bastard!" Salvatore roared.

In a move of utter desperation, the old mob boss reached inside his navy suit jacket, pulling a snub-nosed .38 revolver from his pocket, and aimed it directly at Elena’s chest.

"NO!" Damian shouted.

Damian didn't draw his gun. He stepped directly into the line of fire, wrapping his arms around Elena, turning his back to Salvatore.

BANG!

The shot echoed through the ballroom.

Damian gasped, his body jolting as the bullet struck him squarely in the center of his back.

Elena screamed, catching his heavy frame as he stumbled forward, bringing them both down to their knees on the red carpet.

"DAMIAN!" she cried out, her hands wildly clutching his chest, searching for blood.

Before Salvatore could pull the trigger a second time, the Police Commissioner drew his own service weapon, alongside four federal agents in the crowd.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Salvatore Moretti collapsed backward into a champagne tower, crashing through the glass and crystal, his silver cane clattering across the floor as his blood pooled into the white tablecloths.

The crowd screamed, scattering toward the exits in wild panic.

Elena was on her knees, holding Damian’s face in her hands. Tears streamed down her cheeks. "Damian! Oh God, Damian, look at me!"

Damian let out a long, ragged breath, then slowly opened his eyes. A small, strained smile touched his lips.

He reached up, his hand touching the kevlar vest beneath his torn shirt where the flattened lead bullet was lodged.

"Kevlar... works," Damian wheezed, his voice weak but full of life. "Told you... I promised... nobody touches you."

Elena let out a sob that was half a laugh, pressing her forehead against his, holding him tight as the sirens began to wail outside on Fifth Avenue.
