Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Trap

Back at the Lake Forest estate, the rain battered against the glass of the master suite balcony.
Elena sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, dressed in a soft gray sweatshirt and sweatpants the housekeeper had provided. Sofia was sound asleep in the center of the mattress, tucked beneath the heavy down duvet, breathing peacefully for the first time in her life.
Elena reached out, running a thumb over the girl's soft, tiny cheek.
"Sofia," she whispered, the name feeling foreign yet desperately precious on her tongue. "My sweet little girl."
She still couldn't process it. Her mother—the quiet, deeply religious woman who had baked bread on Sundays and cried at church—had stolen her baby. The betrayal cut deeper than any knife. Every memory of her mother comforting her over the lost infant now turned her stomach into a knot of burning nausea.
The bedroom door opened quietly.
Damian stepped inside. He had changed into a dark turtleneck and grey trousers, but the faint scent of rain and gunsmoke still hung around him. His face was drawn, his eyes weary, carrying the weight of a man who had just discovered his entire life was built on a foundation of lies.
Elena stood up defensively, stepping between Damian and the bed. "What did you find out?"
Damian looked at Sofia sleeping peacefully, then shifted his gaze to Elena. "Your mother didn't sell your baby for profit, Elena."
Elena blinked, her chest tightening. "What?"
"She did it to save your life," Damian said quietly, walking toward the fireplace and leaning his arm against the stone mantle. "She owed forty thousand dollars to Salvatore Moretti’s loan sharks. When Salvatore realized you were giving birth on the same floor where my wife was dying, he gave your mother a choice: hand over the baby to replace my dead child, or he would kill both you and the infant in the delivery room."
Elena collapsed back onto the edge of the bed, her hands flying to cover her face as a dry gasp escaped her throat. "Oh, God... Oh, God..."
"Rosa took the deal to keep you alive," Damian continued, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "She spent the last two years carrying that secret, rotting from the inside out until her heart finally gave out six months ago."
"And Salvatore..." Elena looked up, her eyes wide with horror. "The man you work for? The man who controls half the city?"
"He's my father-in-law," Damian said coldly. "And he used your daughter as a pawn to keep me under his thumb. As long as I believed Sofia carried his bloodline, I was bound by Sicilian honor to protect the Moretti family empire."
"So what happens now?" Elena asked, her voice trembling. "Do you give her back to me? Do we run?"
Damian let out a grim, hollow laugh. "Run? Elena, Salvatore has three hundred armed soldiers under his command. He has federal judges on his payroll. The moment he realizes you have Sofia, he won't just come for the child—he will slaughter everyone who knows the truth to protect his reputation within the Commission."
Elena stood up, walking right up to the mob boss, grabbing the sleeve of his sweater. "I don't care about your Commission! I don't care about your mob war! That is my daughter! I lost two years of her life! I won't let another monster take her away from me!"
Damian looked down at her small hands gripping his arm, then met her fierce, unyielding gaze. For two years, everyone around him had cowered in fear of his title. But this woman—exhausted, broken, and terrified—was standing in his face, ready to fight the entire underworld for the child they had both raised in their hearts.
"I'm not giving her up either, Elena," Damian said softly, a dark, protective fire igniting in his eyes. "I raised her. I held her when she had fevers. I bought her every strawberry she ever ate. She might have your blood, but she is my daughter."

Elena stared at him, tears filling her eyes. "She can't have two lives, Damian."
"Then we give her one," Damian declared, his grip tightening on her waist as he pulled her closer, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Salvatore wants a Moretti-Caruso bloodline? We give him a war. You and I are going to tear his empire down, brick by brick. And when the dust clears... Sofia stays with us."
