Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Water

The convoy of three armored Black Cadillacs moved in dead silence through the rain-slicked streets of Brooklyn.
Inside the rear passenger compartment of the middle vehicle, Elena sat huddled in the corner of the plush leather bench seat. She refused to let go of Sofia. The little girl had fallen asleep, her tiny face pressed firmly against Elena’s chest, one small hand clutching a fold of Elena’s stained waitress apron as if she feared that letting go would make her mother vanish into the dark again.
Damian sat directly across from them, his long legs crossed, staring out the tinted window at the passing streetlights.
"You can't keep us," Elena said softly, her voice shaking despite her attempt at strength. "You're a powerful man, Mr. Caruso, but this is kidnapping. That is my daughter."
Damian didn't look away from the window. "If you step out of this car alone tonight, Elena, you will be dead before sunrise."
Elena’s breath caught. "Is that a threat?"
"It’s a warning," Damian replied, finally turning his head. His eyes were cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of mercy. "Think about it. Whoever orchestrated this scam didn't just steal a baby. They faked medical records, compromised a major hospital, and scammed the Caruso family out of millions while handing me another woman's child. If they find out you know the truth—if they realize Sofia just spoke her first word to her biological mother in a room full of witnesses—they will eliminate the evidence. And right now, the evidence is you."
"My mother..." Elena swallowed hard, looking down at Sofia’s sleeping face. "Do you think my mother was part of it?"
"Rosa Moretti died of a sudden cardiac arrest six months ago, correct?" Damian asked.
"Yes. In her sleep."
"She was fifty-two years old with no history of heart disease," Damian said flatly. "I’m having her body exhumed by sunrise tomorrow to run a full toxicology screen."
Elena pulled Sofia closer, a cold shudder running down her spine. The woman who had raised her, who had comforted her, who had tucked her in at night... had Rosa been a victim, or a monster?
The Cadillac turned off the main road, passing through a massive set of wrought-iron gates guarded by four armed men carrying short-barreled rifles. They entered a sprawling estate overlooking the pitch-black waters of the Upper New York Bay. The house was a modern fortress of reinforced glass, gray stone, and high-voltage security perimeters.
The car stopped under the wide portico. Marco opened the door.
"The house is swept, Boss," Marco reported. "No sign of chatter on the federal bands or the street frequencies."
Damian stepped out first, then turned and reached into the vehicle, offering his hand to Elena.
Elena stared at his open palm. "I’m not staying here as your prisoner."
"You’re staying here as my guest until I find out who put my daughter in the middle of a mafia war," Damian said calmly. "Take my hand, Elena. Or I can have Marco carry you. The choice is yours."
Elena glared at him, ignored his hand, and carefully swung her legs out of the SUV, holding Sofia tight against her shoulder as she stepped out into the damp night air.
They entered a massive, marble-tiled foyer. A housekeeper in a dark uniform rushed forward, her eyes wide with shock when she saw the waitress carrying the boss's daughter.
"Prepare the guest suite on the third floor," Damian instructed the housekeeper. "Next to Sofia’s nursery. Ensure the balcony doors are locked from the master control panel."
"Yes, Mr. Caruso," the woman murmured, scurrying away.
Damian turned back to Elena. "There are clothes in the wardrobe. Food will be brought up. Sofia stays in your room tonight, since she clearly refuses to detach herself from your apron."
"And what are you going to do?" Elena asked, watching him unbutton his suit jacket to reveal the leather shoulder holster housing a black semi-automatic pistol.
May you like
Damian adjusted the leather strap across his chest, his face hardening into the mask of the man the newspapers feared.
"I'm going to go have a conversation with Dr. Vance," he said quietly. "Try to get some sleep, Elena. The real nightmare starts tomorrow."
