Chapter 8 - The Life We Chose

One year later.
The sea breeze swept across the high cliffs of the coastal estate in Rhode Island, carrying the sweet scent of blooming hydrangeas and salt water.
A long white aisle was laid across the manicured green lawn, leading toward a flower-covered altar overlooking the crashing blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of guests—reformed business leaders, charity workers, doctors, and friends—sat in rows of white chairs, smiling as soft violin music floated through the air.
At the front of the altar stood Matteo Varela.
He looked stunning in a tailored navy tuxedo, his dark hair styled back, his posture proud and commanding. But his eyes weren't looking at the crowd or the ocean. They were locked onto the back of the aisle, waiting for the only vision that mattered.
The violin music shifted into a sweeping, romantic melody.
The crowd stood up.
At the entrance of the aisle stood Lily, looking like a little princess in a floor-length white dress with a crown of yellow daisies in her hair. She walked down the aisle with a radiant smile, tossing flower petals onto the carpet with pure delight.
And then, I stepped forward.
I wore a sweeping ivory lace gown that caught the golden afternoon light, holding a bouquet of white roses and yellow wildflowers. As I walked down the aisle, I looked at the man waiting for me at the end.
The man who had once been a feared shadow in the city. The man who had fought through fire, blood, and betrayal to protect his daughter. The man who had given me a home, a purpose, and a future beyond my wildest dreams.
When I reached the altar, Matteo stepped down to take my hand. His fingers were warm, steady, and trembled slightly with deep emotion.
“You are breathtaking, Maya,” he whispered, his dark gold eyes shining with tears.
“And you are my home, Matteo,” I replied softly.
The minister stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and new beginnings. But when it came time for the vows, Matteo turned to face me fully, taking both of my hands in his.
He didn't speak his vows out loud right away.
Instead, the most powerful man in the state raised his hands in front of hundreds of watching guests and signed his vows in perfect, beautiful, elegant American Sign Language.
I was lost in the dark, he signed, his eyes locked onto mine. I was built of stone and fear. But you walked into my world and spoke a language of grace. You saved my daughter. You saved my soul. I promise to love you, honor you, and protect you through every storm, for all the days of my life.
A collective gasp of emotional awe rippled through the audience.
I smiled through my tears, raising my own hands to sign back: You are my strength, my heart, and my family. I am yours, forever.
“By the power vested in me,” the minister announced with a beaming smile, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Matteo, you may kiss your bride!”
Matteo pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as his lips met mine in a deep, passionate, life-changing kiss. The crowd erupted into loud cheers, applause, and joyful celebration.
When he lifted me back up, Lily ran up to the altar, jumping into our arms. Matteo lifted her up easily, holding her between us as the three of us embraced under the golden sun.
Lily looked out at the ocean, then looked at the two of us.
She smiled a wide, radiant smile, and in front of everyone, she raised her little hand, forming a small heart over her chest, and signed three words that echoed in our hearts forever:
May you like
We are free.
And as the sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and violet, I held my husband’s hand, hugged my daughter close, and knew that no matter how dark the world became, the light we built together would never fade.
