Chapter 2 - The Flight in the Dark

The engines outside didn’t sound like arrival. They sounded like an siege.

Matteo didn’t wait for me to process his words. His heavy, warm hand clamped around my wrist, pulling me backward down the marble hallway before I could even grab my coat.

“Matteo, what’s happening?” my voice cracked, panic surging through my veins. “Who is outside?”

“Silas,” Matteo said, his voice flat, low, and laced with iron. “He didn’t just find out who you are, Maya. He realized what was in that cedar box.”

My chest tightened until breathing felt like swallowing glass. The leather journal I had found in the lower archive was tucked under my arm, its yellowed pages filled with financial entries, coded names, and my father’s unmistakable handwriting.

Behind us, Lily ran with short, quiet strides, holding onto the hem of my jacket. She didn’t make a sound—she had learned long ago that in her father’s world, noise was a liability. But when I looked down at her, her small fingers moved frantically in the dim light of the corridor.

Traitor. Men with guns.

“I know, sweetheart,” I signed back with one free hand while Matteo dragged us through a hidden panel in the library wall.

The panel closed with a dull thud just as the heavy front doors of the mansion were blown off their hinges with a deafening blast. The shockwave rattled the stone foundations beneath our feet. I gasped, covering Lily’s ears out of instinct, even though the silence in her world protected her from the roar of explosives.

We plunged into a pitch-black staircase cut directly into the foundation of the estate. Matteo pulled a sleek tactical flashlight from his jacket, its sharp beam piercing the damp subterranean air.

“He compromised my security grid,” Matteo muttered, his jaw set so hard the muscle twitched beneath his skin. “Three of my captains stopped responding ten minutes ago. Silas didn’t just betray me—he’s taking the entire city tonight.”

“Why my father?” I demanded, keeping pace with his long strides down the concrete steps. “My father was a simple accountant! He disappeared seven years ago! What does he have to do with Silas?”

Matteo stopped at the bottom of the stairs, turning to look at me. The flashlight illuminated the razor-sharp contours of his face. His dark eyes held something I hadn't seen before: genuine, agonizing guilt.

“Your father wasn’t just an accountant, Maya,” Matteo said softly. “He was my late wife’s brother. He was family. And seven years ago, he discovered that Silas was poisoning my wife to take control of the family’s holdings.”

The air left my lungs in a sharp intake. My uncle... my father... my family.

“Silas framed your father for theft and ordered him killed before he could reach me,” Matteo continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Your father didn’t run away from you, Maya. He fled into the shadows to protect you. And that journal in your hands is the only thing that proves Silas murdered the matriarch of the Varela syndicate.”

Before I could process the shattering revelation, the heavy iron door at the end of the tunnel groaned under a sudden impact.

Lily tugged hard on my shirt. Her hands moved fast in the flashlight beam.

He is close. The snake smells us.

Matteo drew a heavy black sidearm from his shoulder holster, racking the slide with a single, practiced movement. “In the garage at the end of this tunnel, there is an armored SUV. The keys are in the ignition. You and Lily get in.”

“What about you?” I cried out, gripping the journal tightly against my chest.

Matteo looked down at his daughter. He knelt, his massive frame shrinking as he brought his eyes level with hers. He didn’t know how to sign fluently, but he raised his hands and clumsily formed two awkward symbols he had clearly practiced in secret.

Safe. With her.

Lily’s eyes welled with tears. She wrapped her small arms around her father’s neck, hugging him fiercely. Matteo closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, burying his face in her hair, before standing up and shoving me toward the heavy vehicle waiting in the subterranean garage.

“If Silas takes this house tonight,” Matteo said, looking me dead in the eye, “you are the only mother my daughter has left. Drive north. Don’t look back.”
