Chapter 6 - Blood and Truth

The doors of the Grand Harbor Ballroom swung open with a heavy, booming echo that shattered the solemn quiet inside.

Inside, thirty men in tailored suits—the lords of the city’s underground—were gathered around a massive mahogany table. At the head of the room stood Silas Vance, holding a glass of vintage champagne, a arrogant smile plastered across his face.

“Gentlemen,” Silas was saying into a wireless microphone, “as regional director, I regret to inform you that Matteo Varela has succumbed to the tragic pressure of his family’s historical secrets—”

“You always did talk too much, Silas.”

The quiet, thunderous voice cut through the room like an artillery shell.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Matteo Varela stepped into the ballroom. He didn't rush. He walked with the slow, devastating grace of an absolute monarch returning to his court. He wore a midnight-black coat, his eyes locked onto Silas with a coldness that made the temperature in the room drop ten degrees.

Beside him walked me, wearing a sharp black dress, holding the original cedar box in my arms. And beside me, holding my hand with complete confidence, was Lily.

Silas dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, sparkling liquid soaking into the Persian rug.

“Impossible...” Silas stammered, his face turning a sickening shade of grey. “You... you were killed in the tunnel—”

“Your mercenaries were sloppy, Silas,” Matteo said smoothly, stopping twenty feet from the head table. “Just like you were sloppy seven years ago when you murdered my wife and framed her brother.”

The room erupted into furious whispers. Two elder bosses from the Genovese family stood up, their hands hovering near their coats.

“What is the meaning of this, Varela?” elder boss Carmine demanded. “Silas just presented documents claiming you abandoned the family!”

“Silas presented lies,” I spoke up, stepping forward into the center of the hall, my voice ringing clear and strong through the immense space.

Silas’s eyes locked onto me, wild with murderous fury. “Who let this servant girl in here? Guards, execute them!”

None of the guards moved. Outside the glass windows of the ballroom, dozens of red laser dots appeared on the chest of every one of Silas’s loyal men. Matteo’s outer guard had already secured the perimeter.

I opened the cedar box in front of the elder bosses, pulling out the original leather journal and setting it on the glass podium.

“My name is Maya Lin,” I announced to the powerful men in the room. “I am the daughter of Julian Lin—the chief financial auditor who was framed and murdered seven years ago. In this box are the original bank records proving Silas Vance transferred eighty million dollars from the Varela pediatric foundations into his personal accounts in Zurich. And in these pages are the chemical receipts for the thallium compound he used to poison Elena Varela.”

At that exact moment, the massive electronic screens on the ballroom walls flickered.

The audio transcripts began to play. Silas’s own voice echoed through the high ceilings, detailing his plans to murder Elena, frame Julian, and poison Matteo’s legacy.

Silas backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the river, his eyes darting frantically like a trapped rat.

“It’s a setup!” Silas screamed, pulling a concealed compact pistol from his waistband and aiming it directly at my chest. “She’s a liar! They’re all liars!”

Before Silas could pull the trigger, Lily stepped out from behind me.

She didn't scream. She didn't flinch.

She raised both hands in front of the entire assembly of mafia bosses and signed three distinct words directly at Silas.

You killed my mother.

The sight of the small, silent girl confronting her mother's killer struck the room like a physical blow. Elder boss Carmine looked at Silas with utter disgust, signaling his men to disarm him.

Matteo moved faster than a striking shadow.

In a fraction of a second, he closed the distance between himself and Silas, disarming the pistol with a single crushing blow to Silas’s wrist. He grabbed Silas by the throat, lifting the grown man three feet off the ground and slamming him against the reinforced glass window.

The glass cracked under the force of the impact.

“You took my wife,” Matteo growled, his voice deep, demonic, and terrifying. “You tried to take my daughter. And you tried to destroy the woman who saved us.”

“Matteo... please...” Silas choked out, his eyes bulging as his feet kicked helplessly in the air. “We were... brothers...”

“My brother died seven years ago,” Matteo whispered cold against Silas’s ear. “You are just a snake.”

With a single, decisive movement, Matteo hurled Silas across the marble floor. Federal agents and loyal Varela captains burst through the double doors, slamming Silas onto the ground and dragging him away in steel handcuffs to face a lifetime in a maximum-security prison.

The ballroom fell into total, breathless silence.

Matteo stood in the center of the hall, breathing heavily, adjusting his cuffs. He turned toward the council of bosses.

“The Varela family is under new management,” Matteo announced, his voice echoing with absolute supremacy. “We are shutting down every illegal shipping line. We are turning our assets toward legitimate enterprise. If any of you have an objection to this new order... step forward now.”

Not a single man moved. Every boss in the room bowed his head in silent, absolute submission.
