Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Love

One year later.
The bells of St. Patrick’s Cathedral echoed through the streets of Manhattan, sounding a glorious chime that rang out over the entire city.
Inside, sunlight streamed through towering stained-glass windows, painting the aisle in brilliant shades of crimson, sapphire, and gold. The church was filled to capacity with hundreds of guests—city officials, doctors, charity directors, and reformed family members—all dressed in elegant attire.
At the front of the altar stood Ricardo Moretti.
He looked majestic in a tailored black tuxedo, his jaw clean-shaven, his eyes fixed with absolute devotion on the massive oak doors at the back of the cathedral. Beside him stood Leo, looking sharp in a mini tuxedo, holding a velvet cushion with two platinum wedding bands.
The grand organ swelled into a triumphant wedding march.
The double doors swung open.
I stepped onto the white runner, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies and gardenias. My dress was a sweeping lace gown that trailed behind me, catching the light like a waterfall of diamonds.
As I walked down the aisle, I didn't see the grand cathedral. I didn't see the hundreds of watching guests.
I saw only the man waiting for me at the end.
The man who had rescued me from the cold rain. The man who had fought a war to keep me safe. The man who had given me a family when I thought I was doomed to spend my life alone in the dark.
When I reached the altar, Ricardo stepped down, taking my hand from my uncle's arm. His grip was warm, steady, and filled with a gentle reverence.
"You look like an angel, my love," he whispered, his eyes shining with tears he didn't bother to hide.
"And you look like my dream," I whispered back.
The priest stepped forward, his voice echoing through the sacred hall. "We are gathered here today to unite Ricardo Moretti and Clara Vance in holy matrimony..."
When it came time for the vows, Ricardo didn't read from a card. He took both of my hands in his, looking directly into my soul.
"Clara," he said, his voice rich and steady. "I spent my life believing that strength meant standing alone in the dark. But you showed me that true strength is found in love, in trust, and in family. I give you my name, my heart, and my life. I promise to honor you, protect you, and cherish you through every sunrise and every storm, until my final breath."
I felt tears of pure joy slipping down my cheeks as I made my vow.
"Ricardo," I murmured, squeezing his hands tightly. "You gave me a home when I was lost. You gave me a son to love, and a life worth living. I give you my forever. I am yours, completely and endlessly."
"By the power vested in me," the priest announced with a radiant smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Ricardo, you may kiss your bride!"
Ricardo pulled me into his arms, dipping me gently as his lips met mine in a deep, passionate, life-defining kiss. The cathedral erupted into loud applause, cheers, and tears of joy.
When he lifted me back up, Leo ran up to our side, wrapping his small arms around our legs. Ricardo lifted Leo up onto his hip, holding us both close against his heart.
We turned to face our friends and family, walking down the aisle together as one united, unshakable family.

Outside, on the steps of the cathedral, the afternoon sun washed over us in brilliant gold.
I looked up at my husband, then down at my son, knowing that our past was finally behind us, and the future before us was filled with infinite light, safety, and endless love.
