Chapter 7 - The True Name

Three months later.
The spring sun warmed the stone courtyard of the Moretti estate. The heavy iron shutters had been permanently removed from the windows, replaced by white linen curtains that fluttered softly in the gentle breeze.
In the center of the garden, Leo was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Ricardo had bought him for his fourth birthday. His laughter bounced off the brick walls—a sound that was now the permanent soundtrack of the mansion.
I sat on a wrought-iron bench beneath a blooming cherry blossom tree, holding a official letter from the State Board of Nursing.
“Dear Miss Vance,” the letter read. “Following the full clearance of your legal status by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, your nursing school credits have been reinstated. You are cleared to complete your final semester at New York University.”
I smiled, tears of quiet happiness glistening in my eyes. I was no longer hiding behind fake names. I was no longer a waitress on the run. I was whole again.
A pair of polished leather shoes appeared in the grass beside the bench.
I looked up. Ricardo stood there, wearing a crisp light-grey suit, his dark hair catching the golden sunlight. He looked relaxed, powerful, and deeply, undeniably handsome.
Over the last ninety days, he had systematically converted his family’s illegal holdings into legitimate maritime shipping, real estate, and charitable foundations. The mafia don had stepped out of the shadows, becoming one of the most respected business leaders in the city.
"What does the letter say?" he asked, sitting down beside me on the bench, taking my hand in his.
"I start classes next month," I smiled, leaning my head against his broad shoulder. "Nurse Clara Vance."
"Not Vance," Ricardo corrected softly.
I paused, looking over at him.
Ricardo reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a velvet box. He didn't open it right away. He looked at me, his golden-brown eyes filled with an emotion so deep, so pure, it took my breath away.
"When I picked you up in that Escalade six months ago," Ricardo said, his voice low and rich, "I offered you a contract. I gave you rules. I told you not to ask questions, not to look into my life, and never to fall in love with me."
He flipped open the velvet box.
Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, sparkling brilliant white in the afternoon sun.
"I was a fool, Clara," Ricardo whispered, sliding down from the bench onto one knee in the soft green grass. "You broke every single rule I gave you. You saved my life. You brought my son back from the dead. And you taught a broken man how to love again."
He looked up at me, taking my trembling hand.
"No contracts. No rules. No fake engagements," Ricardo swore gently. "Clara Vance... will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the mother of my children?"
From across the lawn, Leo came running over, the puppy tumbling behind him. He skidded to a halt beside his father, looking at me with his wide, hopeful brown eyes.
"Clara stay?" Leo asked softly, taking my other hand. "Mommy stay forever?"
The word Mommy fell from his lips like a gentle benediction.

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks as I laughed, dropping down onto the grass beside them both, throwing my arms around Ricardo’s neck and pulling Leo into our lap.
"Yes!" I cried out, kissing Ricardo’s lips deeply as his arms wrapped around us both. "Yes, I’ll stay! Forever!"
