Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

The threat of Marcus was gone, but the storm outside the gates was growing stronger.

With his insider spy dead, Victor Vance knew his window of opportunity was closing. He went to open war. Over the next two weeks, three of Ricardo’s warehouses were firebombed, and trade routes across the river were completely paralyzed.

Inside the estate, however, an uneasy sanctuary had formed.

I spent my days teaching Leo how to draw and helping him practice his speech. But my nights were filled with a different kind of torture.

Every evening, Ricardo would return late from his meetings, covered in the scent of rain, cigar smoke, and underlying danger. And every evening, he would find his way to the kitchen where I sat waiting with a pot of hot coffee.

We didn't talk about the mob. We talked about small things—my dream of finishing nursing school, his memories of growing up on the streets of Brooklyn, and the way Leo’s laugh sounded like music in a house that had been silent for too long.

One night, as a thunderstorm rattled the tall glass doors of the patio, Ricardo sat across from me at the kitchen island. He looked exhausted, the shadows under his eyes darkening his striking features.

"The federal prosecutors contacted my legal team today," I said quietly, pushing a mug of coffee toward him. "They know Victor Vance is preparing a massive shipment down at the Hudson pier tomorrow night. If I testify as the witness from the Chicago murder, they can issue an arrest warrant that will lock Victor away for life."

Ricardo stopped mid-sip. He set the mug down slowly, his eyes darkening.

"No," he said flatly.

"Ricardo, it’s the only way this ends!" I argued, leaning across the counter. "As long as Victor is free, Leo and I will always be targets! If I stand up in court and identify him, the FBI takes him down!"

"And what happens when his men put a sniper on the courthouse steps, Clara?" Ricardo snapped, standing up, his tall frame towering over the island. "Do you think a subpoena protects you from a high-caliber bullet? Do you think the government gives a damn about your life once they get their conviction?"

"I'm not afraid!" I yelled, standing up to match his fury.

"Well, I am!" Ricardo roared.

The word echoed off the granite countertops, hanging heavily in the air between us.

I froze.

Ricardo Moretti—the man who didn't flinch when guns were drawn, the man who ruled an underworld empire with an iron fist—was breathing heavily, his chest heaving, staring at me with a raw, agonizing terror in his eyes.

He walked around the island, stopping inches from me.

"I lost my wife because I was too late," he whispered, his voice trembling with a confession that shattered his icy defense. "I spent three years shutting down my heart, turning myself into a monster so no one could ever use my feelings against me again. And then you walked into that restaurant."

He reached out, his long fingers cupping the back of my neck, pulling me close until our foreheads rested together.

"You sat in broken glass and gave my son milk," he murmured, his thumb tracing my jawline. "You brought light back into this cursed house. If anything happens to you, Clara... if Victor takes you away from me... I won't survive it."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Ricardo..."

"Break the contract," he whispered, his lips hovering an inch from mine. "Forget the money. Forget the fake engagement. Run away. I’ll send you to Europe. I’ll give you millions. Just stay alive."

I looked into his eyes—the dark, fierce, beautiful eyes of a man who loved me enough to let me go.

"I'm not running anymore, Ricardo," I whispered back.

I reached up, wrapping my hands around his collar, and pulled him down into a kiss.

It wasn't gentle. It was explosive, hungry, and filled with five years of buried fear and desperate passion. Ricardo let out a low groan, his arms locking around my waist, lifting me effortlessly against the edge of the counter as his mouth claimed mine completely.

When we finally broke apart, both of us breathless, he rested his lips against my neck, his heartbeat echoing wildly against my palm.

"Tomorrow night, Victor dies," Ricardo swore against my skin. "Not in a courtroom. In the dark. And then you and Leo belong to me forever."
