Chapter 5 - BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The quiet evening inside the Moretti estate shattered in an instant.

Sirens didn't wail; instead, a low, pulsing red alarm klaxon began to echo through the hallways as the estate’s automated security grid detected unauthorized movement at the perimeter gates.

"Salvatore, get the armored transport ready," Nicholas barked, his hand instantly sliding beneath his jacket to grip the polished steel of a customized Beretta. He turned to Nora, his dark eyes blazing with fierce urgency. "You're coming with me. Now."

"I'm not running away from them," Nora said, her voice shaking slightly, but her jaw set with stubborn resolve. "They're coming after me because of what I did. I'm not hiding while your men bleed for my choices."

"Nora, listen to me—" Nicholas started, but the sound of shattering glass from the ground floor cut him off.

Bang. Bang-bang.

Gunfire. Heavy, suppressed automatic weapons tearing through the front foyer windows. The Rossi syndicate hadn't sent a small hit squad; they had sent an army to wipe out the Moretti leadership in one ruthless strike.

"Stay behind me," Nicholas ordered, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind a sliding mahogany bookshelf in the study.

As they reached the hallway, two of Nicholas's guards burst around the corner, firing blindly down the sweeping marble staircase at masked intruders who were swarming up the steps. One guard took a round to the shoulder, collapsing against the wallpaper in a spray of blood.

Without thinking, instinct took over.

Nora wrenched her arm free from Nicholas, sprinted toward the wounded guard, and dragged him behind a heavy marble pillar out of the line of fire. She ripped the tie from her neck, pressing it hard against his bleeding shoulder to stem the arterial spray, using the exact pressure-point technique she had learned during her clinical rotations at NYU.

"Hold this!" she shouted to the second guard, who stared at her in stunned disbelief before clamping his hand over the makeshift tourniquet.

Nicholas watched her, a mixture of awe and terrifying protectiveness washing over his face. He raised his Beretta and fired twice down the hallway, dropping the two leading intruders with ruthless, clinical precision.

"Move!" Nicholas yelled, grabbing Nora's hand and hauling her toward the heavy steel door of the panic room.

Just as they reached the threshold, a heavy shadow lunged out from the side corridor. A masked assassin, his face obscured by a black balaclava, raised a tactical shotgun directly at Nicholas's chest.

There was no time to aim.

Nora threw her weight forward, slamming her shoulder into Nicholas’s side and knocking him sprawling across the polished floor just as the shotgun roared.

BOOM.

Buckshot chewed through the wooden paneling inches above their heads, sending wood splinters raining down like shrapnel.

Before the assassin could rack another round, Nicholas rolled onto his back, raised his pistol, and put a single bullet squarely between the man's eyes. The assassin dropped instantly, lifeless on the marble floor.

Silence fell over the hallway for one terrifying heartbeat, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens approaching through the night.

Nicholas scrambled to his feet, panting heavily, and hauled Nora up into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if checking to make sure she was still breathing.

"Are you insane?" Nicholas shouted, his voice cracking with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to show. "You could have been killed!"

"You saved me from the river," Nora whispered, looking up into his dark, fierce eyes with absolute calm. "We're even now."

Nicholas stared down at her, the hard lines of the mafia boss melting away, replaced by something raw, vulnerable, and terrifyingly permanent.

"We're not even close to even, Nora," he murmured, before pulling her safely inside the heavy steel doors of the vault as Salvatore and the remaining guards secured the perimeter.
