Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING OF A NEW POWER

Dawn filtered through the rusted iron grates of the subterranean tunnel, casting long, dusty shafts of amber light across the concrete floor.

Nora woke up curled against the opposite wall, stiff and freezing. Across the room, Nicholas Moretti was already sitting upright. Despite the severe gunshot wound in his side, his posture was ramrod straight, his dark eyes alert and scanning the perimeter like a caged panther.

Before Nora could speak, the heavy iron door at the end of the maintenance tunnel swung open with a sharp screech.

Three men stepped into the room. They wore dark suits, long woolen overcoats, and carried themselves with the unmistakable, lethal grace of trained enforcers. At the front was an older man with silver temples and a broken nose—Salvatore, Nicholas’s right-hand man.

Salvatore froze when he saw Nicholas sitting on a dirty sleeping bag, wrapped in a blanket, pale but alive. The older enforcer’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

"Boss," Salvatore breathed, rushing forward and dropping to one knee beside him. "We thought... the car went straight down. We combed the riverbanks for hours. The Federales and the rival families think you're at the bottom of the Hudson."

"They were wrong," Nicholas said, his voice deep and resonant. He gestured toward Nora, who was standing awkwardly by the corner. "This girl pulled me out of the freezing water, dragged me up a rocky embankment, and stitched my side with a pocketknife while I bled out."

Salvatore slowly stood up and turned his gaze toward Nora. His expression was unreadable, a mixture of intense scrutiny and profound respect. He dipped his head slightly.

"You saved Don Moretti's life, Miss..."

"Nora," she said, crossing her arms defensively.

"Nora," Salvatore repeated. "The Moretti family does not forget debts like this."

Nicholas stood up, wincing slightly as his muscles protested, but brushing off Salvatore’s helping hand with a stern look. He looked down at his ruined clothes, then over at Nora, who stood in her oversized, mud-stained hoodie and worn-out sneakers.

"Salvatore," Nicholas commanded, his voice carrying absolute authority. "Get the cars. We're going home. And bring a change of clothes for our guest."

"Boss, are you sure?" Salvatore hesitated, glancing around the damp tunnel. "Bringing an outsider—"

"She is not an outsider anymore," Nicholas interrupted, his eyes locking onto Salvatore with a glare that brooked no argument. "She is under my personal protection. Anyone who touches a hair on her head answers to me."

Within an hour, a convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the abandoned service exit near the river. Nora was ushered into the back of a heated luxury vehicle, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, and handed a hot cup of coffee by a terrified driver who looked at her as if she were a ghost.

As the convoy sped away from the riverfront and headed toward the sprawling, heavily guarded Moretti estate in Upper Manhattan, Nora stared out the window at the passing city skyline.

Her old life—the cold concrete, the hunger, the endless despair under the bridge—was gone.

In its place was a gilded cage built by a man who controlled half the underworld. And as Nicholas reached across the leather seat and placed a warm, heavy hand over hers, Nora knew there was no turning back.

She had just stepped into the lion's den. And the lions were ready to tear anyone apart who dared threaten her.
