Chapter 4 - THE GOLDEN CAGE AND THE WHISPERS OF WAR

The Moretti estate looked less like a home and more like a fortress. Surrounded by towering iron gates, security cameras, and armed patrols, the sprawling limestone mansion sat perched on a private hill overlooking the Hudson River—the very river that had tried to claim Nicholas’s life just two nights ago.
Inside, the opulence was staggering. Polished marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and walls lined with priceless oil paintings created an atmosphere of wealth so heavy it felt suffocating.
Nora stood in the center of a massive guest suite, staring at her reflection in a gold-framed vanity mirror. She was wearing a tailored cashmere sweater dress and soft wool slippers provided by the household staff, her hair brushed out and falling in soft waves around her shoulders.
Yet, despite the luxury, she felt like an impostor.
A sharp knock echoed at the double doors.
"Come in," Nora called out.
The door opened, and Nicholas walked in. He had changed into a crisp black suit, the gunshot wound hidden beneath layers of fine fabric, though his movements were still slightly rigid. He looked at Nora, and for a fraction of a second, the cold, impenetrable mask of the mafia boss softened.
"It suits you," Nicholas said quietly, gesturing to the dress.
"It feels like wearing someone else's skin," Nora replied, walking toward the window to look out at the manicured gardens below. "What happens now, Nicholas? Do I just live here like a pet bird in a golden cage?"
"You live here because you are safe here," Nicholas said, stepping closer. "Word has already leaked that my car went into the river. The rival families—specifically the Rossi syndicate—believe I am dead. They are already moving to carve up my territory."
Nora turned around, her medical training and sharp mind kicking into gear. "And when they realize you survived? When they figure out someone pulled you out?"
A dark, dangerous light flashed in Nicholas’s eyes. "They won't know until it's too late. But that brings me to why I came up here."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a manila folder, placing it gently on the mahogany desk.
"Your student loans. Your mother's medical debt. The back rent on your apartment," Nicholas listed calmly. "I had my financial team clear every single cent by noon today. You owe nothing to anyone, Nora. You are completely free."
Nora stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. For two years, that crushing debt had been an anchor dragging her down into the abyss. Now, with a single stroke of a mob boss's pen, it was gone.
"Why?" she whispered, tears stinging the corners of her eyes. "You didn't have to do this."
"I told you," Nicholas said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. "A life saved is a debt paid in full. But more than that... I don't like seeing people destroyed by a system that was supposed to protect them."
Before Nora could process his words, a frantic knock echoed at the bedroom door, and Salvatore burst into the room, his face pale and grim.
"Boss," Salvatore panted, looking at Nicholas with urgent alarm. "We just intercepted a secure wire transmission. The Rossis know you survived the crash. And they’ve tracked the leak... straight to the girl."
Nicholas’s face went completely blank, transforming instantly into a mask of pure, lethal fury.

"How?" Nicholas snarled.
"An ER nurse at St. Jude's recognized the description of the girl who bought medical supplies with a stolen clinic badge three days ago," Salvatore said grimly. "The Rossis have put a bounty on her head. And their hit squad is already crossing the bridge."
