Chapter 6 - THE HOME WE BUILT

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box.
Lily stopped eating her strawberry shortcake, her big brown eyes wide with curiosity. "Is that a present?" she gasped.
Nathaniel laughed softly, dropping to one knee—not to apologize, but to ask for a future.
He opened the box. Inside sat a simple, elegant sapphire ring, surrounded by tiny sparkling diamonds, gleaming under the warm dining room lights.
"Elena," Nathaniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "You brought light back into this house. You brought love back into my heart. I don't want you to manage this estate anymore. I want you to own it with me. Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure happiness welled up in my eyes. I looked down at the man who had shielded my daughter from the world’s cruelty, who had restored my dignity, and who had loved us with quiet, unwavering devotion.
"Yes," I whispered, my voice breaking with joy. "Yes, Nathaniel. A thousand times yes."
Nathaniel stood up and slipped the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly. He pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply while Lily clapped her hands and giggled with excitement from her chair.
"Does this mean Nathaniel is my daddy now?" Lily asked, jumping down from her seat and wrapping her small arms around both of our legs.
Nathaniel leaned down, lifting Lily effortlessly up into his arms, holding us both in a tight, loving embrace.
"It means," Nathaniel promised, kissing Lily’s forehead gently, "that you are the princess of this home. And no one—ever again—will tell you what you can or cannot become."
One Year LaterThe annual Cross Meridian Charity Gala was held once again in the grand ballroom of the Lake Forest estate.
The crystal chandeliers gleamed brightly, the white roses bloomed in massive silk vases, and high society guests filled the room in fine tuxedos and evening gowns.
The string quartet was playing a beautiful, sweeping valse in the corner.
Standing near the dessert table—right beside the grand chocolate fountain—was five-year-old Lily. She wore a stunning white lace dress, a small silver tiara in her curly hair, laughing as she dipped a giant strawberry into the melted chocolate.
Beside her stood Nathaniel, wearing his tailored black tuxedo, proudly holding his daughter’s small hand as guests walked up to greet them with warm smiles and deep respect.
I walked over from the main archway, wearing an emerald green velvet gown, my sapphire engagement ring sparkling under the lights.
Nathaniel turned, his face lighting up the moment he saw me. He put his arm around my waist, pulling me close to his side.
"Everything looks perfect, Mrs. Cross," Nathaniel whispered into my ear, kissing my temple.

I looked around the grand ballroom—at the music, the laughter, the warmth, and most importantly, at my little girl who was growing up safe, loved, and free.
"It is perfect," I smiled, wrapping my hand around his. "Because we built it together."
