Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A DECEIT

The scandal exploded like a thunderclap.

Vanessa’s father, Richard Lowell, was a senior board member of Cross Meridian Hospitality and Nathaniel’s longtime business mentor. For months, the social pages had hailed the upcoming union between Nathaniel Cross and Vanessa Lowell as the merging of two Midwest hotel dynasties.

What the public hadn't known—what even Nathaniel hadn't suspected until that very moment—was that the Lowell family firm was quietly bleeding to death from massive, failed real estate gambles in Dubai.

Vanessa hadn't agreed to marry Nathaniel out of love. She had been sent into his life to secure access to his multi-billion-dollar corporate treasury before her family’s impending bankruptcy became public knowledge.

"Nathaniel, please... let's talk about this privately," Vanessa whispered frantically, glancing around at the stunned faces of Chicago’s highest society. "This is a misunderstanding! My father was restructuring those assets for the merger!"

"Is that why my private estate accounts were also accessed?" Nathaniel asked, pulling out a separate blue clip from the back of the red folder.

His eyes scanned down a list of internal estate expenditures.

"Over the past five months," Nathaniel read aloud, "the monthly maintenance budget for this estate tripled. According to these invoices, our head housekeeper, Elena," he looked over at me, "was allegedly paid forty thousand dollars a month for 'specialized facility management.'"

My heart dropped to the stomach floor. "What?" I gasped, holding Lily tighter. "Mr. Cross, I make twenty-four dollars an hour! I've never received anything beyond my base paycheck!"

"I know, Elena," Nathaniel said gently. He looked back at Vanessa, his face dark with fury. "Because the rest of that money—over two hundred thousand dollars meant for estate repairs and staff bonuses—was siphoned directly into a shell account registered under Vanessa Lowell Enterprises."

Vanessa stood motionless, exposed before two hundred people.

She had used my name—the name of a single mother working seventy hours a week to keep her head above water—as a dummy line item to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars in estate cash.

"You didn't just steal from my company," Nathaniel said, his tone deadly calm. "You stole from my home. You framed the staff who keep this house running. And then you stood here and insulted a four-year-old child because you thought you were untouchable."

"Nathaniel!" Vanessa screamed as he reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out his phone. "Think about the press! Think about the stock price tomorrow morning!"

"I am thinking about justice," Nathaniel replied coldly.
