Chapter 1 - THE RED FOLDER

The silence in the grand ballroom was so thick you could hear the soft hum of the air circulation and the rhythmic, terrified beats of my own heart.

Nathaniel didn't look at the high-society guests staring at him. He didn't look at the waiters holding silver trays, frozen mid-step. His dark eyes remained fixed on Vanessa, whose cheeks had flushed a mottled, furious red beneath her heavy foundation.

"Nathaniel," Vanessa began, adjusting her diamond necklace with trembling fingers, her voice recovering a sharp, defensive edge. "The child was putting her filthy hands into the dessert display. Elena has no discipline over her. She’s turned this house into her personal daycare."

Nathaniel reached us. He didn't address Vanessa. Instead, he dropped to one knee on the polished marble floor—right in front of Lily.

"Are you okay, sweet pea?" he asked softly.

Lily tucked her head into the crook of my neck, her small shoulders shivering. "I didn't break it," she whispered. "I just wanted the strawberry."

"I know," Nathaniel said gently. He took his clean white silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently wiped the smear of chocolate from Lily’s thumb. "You can have all the strawberries you want. In fact, Mr. Thomas in the kitchen made a whole plate of them just for you."

He stood up slowly. The gentle warmth in his eyes vanished the moment he turned to face his fiancée.

"You told a four-year-old child she’d never be more than a servant," Nathaniel said. His voice was low, but in that silent room, it carried to every corner.

"It was a remark made in stress!" Vanessa snapped, stepping closer to him, desperate to regain her footing. "Look at this place! It’s the annual Meridian Gala! The board of directors is here, Nathaniel! Donors from London and Tokyo are here! And your head housekeeper’s child is running loose, smearing chocolate on ten-thousand-dollar table linens! I was establishing boundaries!"

"You were displaying cruel arrogance," Nathaniel corrected calmly. "And you did it in my home."

"Your home?" Vanessa laughed bitterly. "In eight days, this will be our home!"

"No," Nathaniel replied quietly. "It won't."

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Vanessa froze, her jaw open. "What did you just say?"

Nathaniel didn't answer her immediately. His gaze drifted past her shoulder toward the long, velvet-draped champagne table at the side of the room.

Resting on the lower wooden shelf of the table—half-hidden behind a tub of crushed ice and vintage Dom Pérignon—was a thick, string-bound red leather folder. It had a gold foil stamp on the cover: Cross Meridian Hospitality – Confidential Executive Audits.

I recognized that folder.

Three hours ago, while preparing the grand dining room, I had found Vanessa slipping out of Nathaniel’s private library on the third floor. She had looked startled to see me, rushing down the rear service stairs with her coat over her arm. She must have dropped or stashed the folder behind the bar while making her rounds to inspect the staff.

Nathaniel walked past Vanessa and knelt by the champagne table. He picked up the red folder.

Vanessa’s reaction was instantaneous. Her composure shattered completely.

"Nathaniel, wait!" she lunged forward, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble. "That’s... those are just private wedding planning documents! Legal papers for the caterers! Give that to me!"

Nathaniel held up his hand, stopping her in her tracks. He undid the string clasp and opened the red folder.

Inside were not seating charts or floral invoices. There were hundreds of pages of bank statements, forged internal payroll ledgers, property transfer deeds, and offshore wire confirmations stamped from accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Nathaniel flipped through the pages. As his eyes scanned the numbers, his jaw set into a hard, dangerous line.

"These aren't wedding documents, Vanessa," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer ice. "These are audit records from Cross Meridian’s European acquisition fund. Over eight million dollars diverted over the last six months."

He looked up at her, his dark eyes cutting into hers.

"And every single transfer bears your father's corporate seal... and your signature as the authorized trustee."
