Chapter 8 - The Ruin of Vanity

While Clara’s life blossomed in the clean salt air of Connecticut, Julian Vance was descending into the harsh reality of ordinary life.
The fall had been merciless. Stripped of his executive salary and blacklisted by commercial banks who discovered the full extent of his fraudulent balance sheets, Julian had been forced to move into a tiny, rundown one-bedroom apartment in an industrial suburb of the city.
The luxury friends who had crowded his VIP tables vanished like mist. The calls to private golf clubs were met with polite refusals; his membership had been suspended for delinquent dues.
One evening, desperate and running low on cash, Julian walked into an upscale restaurant in the theater district where he had once held an exclusive table. He spotted Chloe seated in a corner booth, laughing across candlelight with an elderly venture capitalist whose private jet was currently parked at Teterboro.
Julian approached the table, his cheap polyester blazer feeling like sandpaper against his arms. "Chloe?"
Chloe stopped laughing. She looked at him with the cold, unblinking detachment of someone inspecting a smudge on a windowpane. "Excuse me? Do I know you?"
"Chloe, it’s Julian," he stammered, his cheeks burning with mortification. "I... I just wanted to talk to you. You left your coat at—"
"Sir, you're disturbing our dinner," the older gentleman said calmly, signaling the maître d’ with a flick of his index finger.

Within seconds, two security guards flanked Julian, taking him firmly by the elbows and steering him toward the exit. As he was pushed out into the cold drizzle of the avenue, Julian caught his reflection in the restaurant's polished brass doors.
He was hollow. Without his money, without his tailored clothes, without an audience to flatter him, he was nothing more than an insecure, frightened man who had traded a queen for a reflection in a muddy puddle.
