Chapter 3 - The Dawn of Eviction

Morning crept over the bay in cold ribbons of slate and gold. Inside the penthouse, sunlight spilled across the disheveled king-sized bed in the master suite. Julian rolled onto his back, his head throbbing from the late-night bourbon he had celebrated with.
Beside him, Chloe was wrapped in eighty-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, humming softly to herself. "Julian... we need to order imported croissants from that bakery downstairs. And you promised we’d go looking at sports cars this afternoon."
"Whatever you want, Chloe," Julian muttered, rubbing his stubbled chin. He felt invincible. With Clara gone, there would be no more lectures about fiscal responsibility, no more stern looks when he drew an extra fifty grand for a weekend trip to Vegas. He was the master of his domain.
A sharp, rhythmic series of knocks shattered the quiet.
Julian frowned, sitting up. The knocks were not the polite taps of the building concierge. They were heavy, metallic, and unrelenting.
"Who the hell is that?" Julian grumbled, pulling on a silk robe and tying it loosely as he marched into the expansive foyer.
He threw the heavy double doors open, ready to berate whoever had breached his private vestibule.
Instead, he was met by two uniformed county deputies, their badges gleaming in the corridor light. Behind them stood an elderly man with a clipboard, two commercial locksmiths carrying industrial power tools, and a dozen professional movers wearing matching navy coveralls.
"Julian Vance?" the lead deputy asked, his expression completely blank.
"Yes. What is the meaning of this? You are trespassing on private property!" Julian snapped, puffing out his chest.
The deputy stepped forward and extended a manila folder containing the legal documents Clara had held the night before. "Mr. Vance, we are here to execute an immediate writ of possession and civil eviction order issued by the Third District Superior Court."
Julian scoffed, shoving the papers back toward the officer's chest. "This is a mistake. I own this penthouse! My family built this city's real estate market!"
"Sir, the record of title indicates that 800 Harbor Boulevard, Penthouse Unit 42, is owned exclusively by The Solstice Trust, managed solely by Clara Kelly," the deputy stated flatly, his hand resting calmly on his utility belt. "Your sublease agreement and marital tenancy were formally terminated following thirty days of non-remedied default and fraudulent asset diversion. You have forty-five minutes to gather your personal effects. Everything else remains under the custody of the trust."

From behind the bedroom hallway, Chloe emerged, wrapped in a plush robe, her hair wild and her mascara smudged. "Julian? What's going on? Who are these people?"
The locksmith stepped past Julian without a word, setting his metal toolbox onto the floor with a decisive, echoing clatter.
