Chapter 13 - The Road Beyond

Julian looked at the envelope she pressed back into his palms. He stared at it as if he were seeing pure light for the first time.
"Clara... I don't know how to thank you."
"Don't thank me," Clara replied with a warm, steady smile. "Just keep working. Keep lifting the crates. Earn your life, Julian. That is the only real wealth there is."
Thomas stepped around the corner of the house, carrying a wooden toolbox. He paused when he saw the stranger, his posture alert but calm. He did not interfere, recognizing the quiet gravity of the moment, yet his presence provided a solid, protective anchor.
Julian noticed Thomas. He saw the sawdust on the man's jeans, the quiet strength in his bearing, and the respectful, protective way he watched over Clara. Julian understood instantly. He offered a small, respectful nod toward Thomas, which the carpenter returned with quiet dignity.
"Goodbye, Clara," Julian said softly.
"Goodbye, Julian. Be well."
Julian turned and walked back down the gravel driveway toward the road. His shoulders were still tired, but his head was lifted. He was no longer running from the truth; he was walking with it.
Clara watched him until he rounded the bend of the lane and vanished behind the golden canopy of the trees.
Thomas walked over, setting his toolbox on the grass. "Everything all right?"

Clara looked up at him, the autumn sun bathing the porch in deep, radiant amber. She took a deep breath of the crisp, woodsmoke-scented air.
"Everything is finally where it belongs," she said, slipping her hand into Thomas's calloused palm.
