Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT MIA

Leo did not sleep.

He spent the remaining hours before dawn building a timeline on the hotel wall with printed documents, notes, and photographs.

Elena met Grant in Boston four days before the crash.

Elena also visited Dr. Sarah Kent at a clinic there.

Someone used Celeste's credentials to move family money.

Grant's administrative account had cloned those credentials.

Daniel prepared the guardianship petition.

A fabricated video appeared exactly when the first petition looked too weak.

And somewhere inside all of it was a person Elena feared more than Grant.

Leo wrote one question at the center of the wall.

WHY MIA?

Money alone did not explain the custody fight.

If Grant wanted company control, Leo's temporary removal from the board was enough.

He did not need Mia.

Unless Mia controlled something.

Leo called his private attorney, Naomi Brooks, at six twenty.

Naomi was forty-two, precise, and unimpressed by rich families.

She had represented Leo twice in contract disputes and once when a magazine falsely claimed he had assaulted an employee.

“Do not bring the flash drive to court,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel will challenge chain of custody, claim manipulation, and force us to reveal how we found it.”

“He'll say I manufactured it.”

“Exactly.”

“So what do we use?”

“The fake video.”

Leo frowned.

“That's their evidence.”

“Which means they authenticated it.”

“If we prove their strongest evidence is fabricated, the judge starts questioning everything else.”

Marcus spent the morning analyzing the clip.

At ten fifteen, he found something better than the wedding ring glitch.

The study clock in the background displayed 7:18.

Weather records showed that sunset on the claimed date had occurred at 6:41.

Yet bright afternoon light came through the west-facing window.

Worse for Grant, the exact study footage used as the background appeared in a Mercer promotional video recorded eight months after Elena died.

Someone had composited Leo and Elena into later footage.

Naomi smiled when Marcus showed her.

“That is useful.”

Leo's phone rang.

Rosa.

He answered immediately.

“Mia okay?”

“She is fine.”

“Celeste?”

“Also fine.”

“Then why do you sound like that?”

Rosa lowered her voice.

“Someone came to the gate with school transfer papers.”

Leo stood.

“What?”

“They said Mia was being enrolled in a private academy in Connecticut.”

“By who?”

“The paperwork lists Celeste.”

Leo's stomach tightened.

“Did she sign it?”

“She says no.”

Leo closed his eyes.

Another forged document.

Another attempt to establish a new normal before anyone could stop it.

“Do not let anyone take Mia off the property.”

“I already told security.”

Rosa hesitated.

“Leo, there's more.”

“What?”

“The school papers include a medical authorization.”

“Grant Hale is listed as secondary emergency guardian.”

Leo went quiet.

There it was.

Grant did want access to Mia.

Not just leverage over Leo.

He wanted legal proximity.

Naomi noticed his face.

“What happened?”

Leo told her.

She swore under her breath.

“We need the trust documents.”

“Why?”

“Because if Mia controls a contingent interest, guardianship could give someone authority over assets in her name.”

Leo stared at the wall.

His father had structured the Mercer family trust before Mia was born.

Leo had never read every annex.

Grant had.

Daniel had.

Celeste probably had.

Leo had trusted them to handle the machinery while he built the company.

That trust now felt like negligence.

Naomi pulled up a copy of the public trust summary.

Most sections were redacted.

One clause remained visible.

Upon the death or incapacity of Leo Mercer, his direct descendant becomes successor beneficial holder of Class A family shares.

Leo read it twice.

“If I'm declared unfit?”

“Incapacity can include legal incapacity depending on the private definitions.”

“And if Mia becomes beneficial holder?”

“Her guardian could exercise some rights until she reaches the specified age.”

Leo felt sick.

Grant was not trying to take Mia because he cared where she lived.

He was trying to get close enough to control the voting power attached to her name.

Naomi continued searching.

“We need the sealed annex.”

“Where is it?”

“Family counsel would have a copy.”

“Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Leo looked at Marcus.

“Boston storage unit first.”

Naomi shook her head.

“You have a hearing this afternoon.”

“I know.”

“You cannot disappear.”

“I won't.”

He checked the time.

“Boston is ninety minutes by air.”

Naomi stared at him.

“You have three hours.”

Leo picked up his coat.

“Then I have time.”

Naomi muttered something about reckless billionaires.

Leo ignored it.

A Mercer helicopter would have been faster, but Grant could monitor corporate flight logs.

Marcus arranged a charter under his own name.

They landed outside Boston just after noon.

The storage facility was fifteen minutes away.

Elena's unit sat at the end of a climate-controlled corridor.

The brass key from Bunny opened the lock.

Leo lifted the metal door.

Inside was not a collection of boxes.

It was a complete second office.

A desk.

File cabinets.

A printer.

Photographs pinned to corkboard.

Elena had built an investigation room without Leo ever knowing.

At the center of the board was a photograph of Grant.

Beside him was Daniel.

Beside Daniel was Dr. Sarah Kent.

A red thread connected all three.

But the largest photograph on the board was of Celeste.

Across Celeste's picture, Elena had written one sentence in black marker.

SHE IS LYING TO EVERYONE, BUT I THINK SHE IS TRYING TO SAVE US.

Leo stared at the words.

His phone buzzed.

A text from Celeste appeared.

DO NOT COME BACK TO THE HOUSE UNTIL THE HEARING.

A second message followed.

GRANT IS HERE.
