Chapter 15 - THE PROMISE ELENA KEPT

Leo sat alone in the first pew of St. Agnes Chapel for nearly ten minutes.
No one interrupted him.
He did not cry at first.
He simply stared at the empty stone wall where an altar had once stood.
For three years, he had carried one version of Elena's death like a sentence.
She had been leaving him.
She had died afraid of him.
He had failed to recognize how unhappy she was.
Now the truth was worse in some ways and kinder in others.
Elena had been leaving the house to expose people around them.
She had survived the crash.
And she had stayed away.
That last fact still hurt.
When Dr. Kent finally entered the chapel, Leo did not look at her.
“Why didn't she come home?”
Sarah sat several feet away.
“For the first four months, she could not remember enough to know where home was.”
“Then?”
“She remembered fragments.”
“Mia's face.”
“Your voice.”
“The study.”
“The pink heart.”
Leo looked at her.
“What was the heart?”
“Elena used it as a simple verification symbol while she was collecting evidence.”
“If a message came from Celeste or me with the crossed heart, she knew it had not been altered by Grant's people.”
“Mia saw her draw it constantly when she was a toddler.”
Leo thought of Mia reproducing the shape perfectly.
“Why the marker?”
“Eleanor Hart sent it to Mia through the cottage because she needed to know whether Mia still remembered the symbol.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena had recovered enough memory to testify.”
Leo's chest tightened.
Sarah continued.
“She was preparing to contact federal investigators again.”
“She believed Grant still had access to your home and company.”
“If Mia drew the heart somewhere Grant's monitoring system could see it, Grant would move.”
Leo stared at her.
“Elena used Mia as bait?”
Sarah's face changed.
“No.”
“She used the symbol as a test of whether Grant was still watching.”
“She never expected Mia to draw it on your shirt.”
Despite everything, Leo almost laughed.
“That part was definitely Mia.”
Sarah nodded faintly.
“The heart appeared on an internal house camera.”
“Within hours, Thomas warned Grant.”
“That confirmed the surveillance chain.”
Leo's anger returned.
“So Elena knew I would become a target.”
“Yes.”
“And she still didn't contact me directly.”
“She tried twice.”
Leo looked at her sharply.
“When?”
“Eight months ago, a letter was intercepted.”
“Six months ago, the photograph reached Celeste.”
“After that, Elena believed direct contact with you would expose her location before the financial case was ready.”
Leo stood.
“I would have protected her.”
Sarah stood too.
“That is exactly what she was afraid you would try to do.”
Leo stared at her.
Sarah's voice softened.
“She knew you would come running.”
“She knew Grant could provoke you.”
“She knew every camera would be waiting for the angry tattooed husband to appear.”
“So she kept the promise she made after the crash.”
“What promise?”
“To come back only when coming back would not destroy you or Mia.”
Leo looked away.
He hated the logic because it sounded like Elena.
She had always been more patient with danger than he was.
“Where is she now?”
Sarah's face hardened again.
“I don't know.”
Leo turned.
“You just told me she's alive.”
“She left the cottage after Thomas's surveillance was detected.”
“We had a secondary location.”
“She never arrived.”
Leo's relief collapsed instantly.
“When did she disappear?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“Before the fake custody video was filed?”
“Yes.”
Leo's phone rang.
Naomi.
He answered.
“We found Thomas,” she said.
“Where?”
“At a bus terminal outside Hartford.”
“Police have him.”
“Did he say where Elena is?”
A pause.
“He says Grant ordered him to watch the cottage, but he never touched Elena.”
“Do you believe him?”
“I don't know.”
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Daniel Price just asked for federal protection.”
Leo's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
“Because he says Grant is not the person who authorized Elena's false death certificate.”
Leo felt the old cold return.
“Who did?”
Naomi answered quietly.
“He says the authorization came from inside the Mercer family.”
Leo looked toward Celeste standing outside the chapel doors.
Sarah followed his gaze.
“No,” she said immediately.
Leo covered the phone.
“You don't know what I'm thinking.”
“Yes, I do.”
“And Celeste did not authorize it.”
Leo returned to Naomi.
“Who did Daniel name?”
“He won't say over the phone.”
“He says he'll tell you in person.”
Leo closed his eyes.
Even with Grant exposed, another layer remained.

And somewhere beyond all of it, Elena was alive and missing again.
