Chapter 14 - THE PERSON WHO ALWAYS KNEW

Leo called Mercer House from the cottage.
Rosa answered immediately.
“Mia is awake.”
“She wants waffles.”
Leo listened to the familiar irritation in Rosa's voice and felt guilty for suspecting her.
Then he remembered that trust without verification had put him here.
“Who has asked about her this morning?”
Rosa went quiet.
“That is an odd question.”
“Answer it.”
“Her school called.”
“Naomi's office called.”
“Thomas Vale called security twice.”
Leo's attention sharpened.
“Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“He said he needed to update the custody protection plan.”
“Did you speak to him?”
“No.”
“The guard did.”
Leo looked at Naomi.
Thomas Vale was Grant's cousin and the officer whose report had turned a broken garage shelf into an alleged violent outburst.
He was also regional director for residential security.
He would always know where Mia was because protecting family residences was literally his job.
Leo asked Rosa one more question.
“Did Thomas know about the red-door house?”
“I didn't.”
“Then I hope not.”
Leo ended the call and told the detectives.
They requested Thomas's location through company records.
His work phone pinged near St. Matthew's Park in Boston.
Leo felt a cold certainty settle over him.
Dr. Kent had not been warning him about Rosa.
She was warning him about the security system itself.
Grant had built his network using relatives and loyalists in every department that mattered.
Leo called Marcus.
“Can you shut Thomas out of residential systems?”
“I can if the board restores your authority.”
“They haven't.”
“Then Celeste can.”
Celeste frowned.
“Why me?”
“Because your trust authority was suspended only for financial actions.”
“Property security remains under family ownership.”
Celeste called the control center and removed Thomas's credentials.
Thirty seconds later, Thomas called her directly.
She put the phone on speaker.
“Aunt Celeste, there seems to be a mistake.”
Leo's jaw tightened at the false family warmth.
Celeste answered coolly.
“There isn't.”
“Leo is compromised.”
“Grant is under investigation.”
“All the more reason to maintain continuity.”
“Thomas, where are you?”
A pause.
“At the office.”
Leo mouthed, Liar.
Celeste continued.
“Which office?”
“The Boston branch.”
The detectives were already moving.
They reached St. Matthew's Park in under fifteen minutes.
Thomas was gone.
His company vehicle sat in a garage nearby.
Inside were three prepaid phones, printed court filings, and a copy of Mia's school schedule.
One phone contained messages with Grant.
Most were coded.
One was not.
SHE DREW THE HEART.
MOVE E.H. BEFORE LEO CONNECTS IT.
Leo read the message again.
E.H.
Eleanor Hart.
The alias from the medical bills.
Grant had ordered someone moved after Mia drew the heart.
The pink marker had not merely started Leo's investigation.
It had signaled to Grant that the woman in the red-door cottage had made contact.
Naomi pointed to a second message.
KENT IS PANICKING.
CHECK THE OLD CHAPEL.
Dr. Kent had become a target because she knew where Eleanor Hart had been taken.
The old chapel could mean dozens of places.
Marcus searched Mercer property records.
One result appeared.
St. Agnes Chapel, a decommissioned stone building attached to a rural rehabilitation center once funded by the Mercer Foundation.
It was forty miles away.
Police moved first.
Leo followed with Naomi and Celeste despite repeated instructions that he stay behind.
They found Dr. Kent in a caretaker's office beside the chapel.
She was frightened but unharmed.
Two local officers were already with her.
Thomas had arrived twenty minutes earlier, discovered police were searching for him, and fled through the rear service road.
Dr. Kent stared at Leo when he entered.
“You weren't supposed to come.”
“People keep saying that to me.”
She almost smiled.
Then she looked at Celeste.
“You took Mia to the cottage.”
Celeste's chin lifted.
“You sent the instructions.”
“No.”
Celeste went still.
Dr. Kent shook her head.
“I arranged the cottage, but I never told you to bring Mia.”
Leo felt cold.
“Then who did?”
Dr. Kent looked at him.
“The patient.”
Leo's mouth went dry.
“Eleanor Hart?”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Dr. Kent did not answer immediately.
“I treated a woman after the mountain crash.”
“She had facial trauma, memory loss, and no verified identification.”
“Daniel Price arrived before law enforcement completed the identification process.”
“He told the hospital she was Sarah Kent.”
Leo stared at her.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“He used my identity because I had been scheduled to travel with Elena that night.”
“Why?”
“To confuse the record.”
“Then who died?”
Dr. Kent's face tightened.
“The woman in the driver's seat.”
“You were supposed to be driving.”
“Yes.”
“But you weren't.”
“No.”
Leo took one step closer.
“Who was?”
“A federal financial investigator named Rachel Ames.”
Leo stared at her.
The entire accident had been misidentified from the beginning.
Elena had not died in the driver's seat.
Sarah had not been the survivor.
Rachel Ames had died.
And the survivor had been registered under Sarah's name before later becoming Eleanor Hart.
Leo's voice barely came out.
“Was the survivor Elena?”
Dr. Kent looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“She remembered Mia before she remembered her own last name.”
Leo stopped breathing.
The chapel bells had been removed years ago, but something inside him still seemed to ring.
May you like
Elena had survived.
