Chapter 6 - A Promise Sealed in Blood and Light

The thunder of the gunshot faded into quiet, leaving only the sound of heavy rain dripping through the ruined roof of the slaughterhouse.
Damian dropped the shotgun onto the concrete. He turned immediately toward the center of the room, his eyes scanning the shadows until they found Elena.
He sprinted across the floor, falling to his knees before her chair. His hands trembled—hands that had just ended a war—as he pulled a folding knife from his belt and carefully sliced through the thick ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
"Elena... my god, Elena," Damian rasped, his voice breaking with raw, overwhelming emotion. "Are you hurt? Did he touch you?"
The moment her hands were free, Elena didn't pull away. She threw her arms around Damian’s neck, burying her face against his rain-soaked shoulder, holding him with all the strength left in her body.
"I'm okay... I'm okay," she sobbed, tears finally pouring down her cheeks. "You came for me..."
"I will always come for you," Damian whispered fiercely, wrapping his arms tight around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair. "I will tear down the world to get to you."
He pulled back slightly, his hands coming up to cup her face, his thumb tenderly wiping away her tears. He looked into her eyes, his ice-blue gaze filled with an open, terrifyingly beautiful vulnerability.
"The lie is over, Elena," Damian whispered, his voice trembling. "Calloway is gone. The council is secured. You are safe. You can have your clinic back. You can have your quiet life back. You are free to walk away."
Elena looked at him—at the man who had faced an army for her, the man who had bled for her, the man whose dark world had given her the fiercest, most absolute devotion she had ever known.
She reached up, her small hands resting over his warm, calloused cheeks.
"What if I don't want to walk away?" Elena whispered softly.
Damian froze, his breath catching in his throat. "What?"
"The lie saved my life, Damian," Elena said, a soft, radiant smile breaking through her tears. "But somewhere along the way... it stopped being a lie for me. I don't want a quiet life without you. I love you."
Damian stared at her, his heart slamming against his ribs like a sledgehammer. A look of pure, unadulterated joy—a light that wiped away years of dark, lonely violence—spread across his face.
"Say it again," he breathed, his voice hoarse.
"I love you, Damian Cross," she repeated clearly, stepping into his space. "Now kiss your wife."
Damian didn't hesitate. He pulled her into his arms, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that sealed their fate forever. It was a kiss born of blood, fire, and absolute devotion—a promise that no force on earth would ever separate them again.
One year later.
The morning sun shone brightly over the newly rebuilt St. Agnes Free Hospital—no longer a cracked-tile clinic, but a state-of-the-art medical center funded entirely by the Cross Foundation, offering free, high-end healthcare to the entire lower district of the city.
In the sunlit courtyard of the hospital, a grand celebration was underway.
Doctors, nurses, community leaders, and several well-dressed men with hidden holsters gathered around a raised podium decorated with white roses.
Elena stood at the center of the stage, looking radiant in a cream-colored silk dress. She was holding a ribbon-cutting pair of golden shears.
Standing right beside her, holding her hand with quiet, formidable pride, was Damian Cross. He wore a crisp dark suit, his ice-blue eyes warm and content as he looked at his wife.
"And now," Elena announced into the microphone, her voice echoing through the applause of the crowd, "I officially declare the St. Agnes Medical Center open!"
She cut the red ribbon. The crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause. Lucian stood in the front row, clapping respectfully, while several senior lieutenants cheered heartily for their beloved boss and his formidable wife.
As the crowd moved toward the reception tables, Damian pulled Elena gently toward the shade of the courtyard garden, out of sight of the photographers.
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin softly on her shoulder, looking out over the grand medical center.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Cross?" Damian murmured in her ear, his hand coming up to rest gently over her stomach—where a very real, very small bump was just beginning to show under her silk dress.
Elena smiled, covering his large hand with hers, leaning back against his warm, strong chest.
"I have my hospital, my patients are safe, and I have a terrifying mob boss who brings me warm milk at three in the morning when I can't sleep," Elena teased, turning her head to kiss his jawline. "I am the happiest woman alive."
Damian laughed—a rich, deep sound that carried no dark shadows, only absolute peace.
He turned her around in his arms, looking down into the brown eyes that had saved his life on a cold clinic floor a year ago.
"You saved my life, Elena," Damian said softly, pressing a tender kiss to her lips.
May you like
"And you gave me a home, Damian," she replied, resting her forehead against his.
Under the bright morning sun, surrounded by the life and hope they had built together from the ashes of war, the king of the city and his nurse knew that their story was no longer written in blood... but in an everlasting, unbreakable love.
