Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the King

When Damian Cross arrived at the mountain pass an hour later, the scene looked like a war zone.

Three burnt-out SUVs sat smoking in the rain. Seven of his men lay dead on the asphalt. The armored Mercedes was empty, its rear doors thrown wide open, a single torn strip of emerald green silk catching the mountain breeze near the edge of the woods.

Damian stood in the middle of the wreckage, drenched in rain, his suit soaked through, his face carved out of pure, terrifying ice.

Lucian hurried up to him, holding a encrypted phone, his face pale with horror. "Boss... we swept the perimeter. Mateo’s radio was found in the brush. He turned. He sold the route to Calloway."

Damian didn't speak. He didn't roar. He didn't punch the hood of the car.

Instead, a quiet, suffocating stillness settled around him—the kind of stillness that precedes a hurricane. The air around him felt so dangerous, so laced with absolute mortality, that even Lucian took a step back in fear.

Damian reached down, picking up the torn piece of emerald silk from the mud. He pressed it against his palm, his hand closing into a tight, trembling fist.

For four weeks, he had tried to convince himself that keeping Elena Hart near him was just a strategic game—a necessary lie to protect his reputation and keep her safe. But standing in the rain, holding the fabric she had worn hours ago, he knew the absolute truth.

He didn't just want to protect her. He loved her. She was his light, his salvation, his entire world. And if Victor Calloway touched a single hair on her head, Damian would make sure the city burned to the ground.

Damian turned to Lucian, his ice-blue eyes flashing with an unholy, lethal light.

"Call every lieutenant," Damian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that chilled the rain around them. "Unlock the deep vaults. Arm every man we have. Tell the council that the rules are off."

"Boss..." Lucian whispered, wide-eyed. "That means all-out war. The federal authorities—"

"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE AUTHORITIES!" Damian bellowed, his voice echoing through the mountain canyon like thunder. "I want Victor Calloway! I want every house he owns searched! I want every man who takes his money put in the ground! If Elena isn't back in my arms by sunrise... there won't be a West District left to rule!"

Meanwhile, in an abandoned slaughterhouse near the industrial docks, Elena awoke tied securely to a heavy wooden chair.

A single harsh bulb swung overhead, casting long, menacing shadows across the blood-stained concrete floor. Her gown was ruined, her hair disheveled, but as her mind cleared from the chloroform, her eyes burned with fierce, unbreakable defiance.

Victor Calloway sat on a crate ten feet away, twirling a ivory-handled folding knife between his fingers.

"Ah, the sleeping beauty awakes," Victor mocked, standing up and flipping the knife open with a sharp clack. "I was just drafting a letter to your husband. I thought I’d include a little token of our meeting—perhaps your wedding ring finger?"

He stepped toward her, the blade catching the harsh overhead light.

Elena didn't scream. She didn't beg. She looked at the knife, then looked directly into Victor’s eyes with cold, clinical disgust.

"You're a coward, Victor," Elena said, her voice steady and clear. "You can't defeat Damian in a real fight, so you ambush cars in the dark like a rat."

Victor’s face twisted in rage. He stepped forward, raising his hand to strike her across the face. "Shut your mouth!"

BOOM!

The massive iron doors of the slaughterhouse exploded inward with terrifying force.

A wall of fire, shattered metal, and brick dust filled the air. Before Victor or his four hitmen could react, automatic gunfire tore through the smoke with deafening fury.

Three of Victor’s men dropped to the floor instantly. The fourth tried to draw his gun, but a heavy caliber round tore through his chest, dropping him like a sack of stones.

Through the clearing smoke walked Damian Cross.

He carried no body armor. He wore a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a heavy shotgun held low in his right hand, his face splattered with mud and blood. He moved like an unstoppable force of nature, stepping over the bodies of Calloway’s men without glancing down.

Victor gasped in pure, terror-filled shock, dropping his knife and backing toward the rear exit. "No... how did you find this place?! It's not on any register!"

"You forgot one detail, Victor," Damian said, his voice a quiet, terrifying rumble as he racked the slide of his shotgun with a heavy CLACK. "My wife is a nurse. She wears a medical tracking pin hidden inside her heirloom necklace. I knew where she was the moment you took her."

Victor reached frantically for a gun on the table, but Damian didn't hesitate.

BOOM!

A shot shattered the concrete near Victor’s feet, throwing him off balance, sending him crashing onto his back in the dirt.

Damian walked over, stepping heavily onto Victor’s chest, pinning the rival boss to the floor. Damian leaned down, pressing the warm, smoking barrel of the shotgun directly against Victor’s forehead.

"Please... Damian... please!" Victor begged, tears mixing with the dirt on his face. "We can make a deal! I'll leave the city! I'll give you everything!"

Damian looked down at him with cold, absolute disgust.

May you like

"You laid your hands on my wife," Damian whispered softly. "There are no deals for men like you."

Damian pulled the trigger.
