Chapter 1 - The Forbidden Declaration

The silence inside St. Agnes Free Clinic turned so absolute that Elena Hart could hear the blood roaring in her own ears.

The man leading the trio of gunmen was Victor Calloway—a vicious, opportunistic lieutenant in the rival Moretti syndicate who had spent the last three years trying to carve off pieces of Damian Cross's territory. He was flanked by two heavily armed hitmen, their suppressed sidearms held low but ready. Victor’s eyes, yellowed and predatory, swept over the cracked linoleum, the hanging IV bags, and finally landed on the heavy curtain guarding the back recovery alcove.

"Step aside, nurse," Victor said, his voice dripping with condescending malice as he took a step toward her. "Or do I need to put a hole through that pretty white scrub top to get to him?"

Elena didn't budge. Her hand remained buried deep in her scrub pocket, her fingers white-knuckled around the thin handle of a surgical scalpel. "This is a medical facility. You step behind that curtain, and I call the precinct."

Victor laughed—a short, ugly bark. "The precinct? Little girl, I own the precinct on this side of the river. Move."

He reached out, his thick, leather-gloved hand grabbing Elena’s upper arm with brutal force, intending to hurl her against the wall.

Before her shoulder could touch the plaster, a sound echoed from behind the curtain. A sharp, metallic slide of a gun chambering a round, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of bare feet on cold tile.

The curtain was ripped violently aside.

Damian Cross stood in the opening. He was stripped to the waist, thick white bandages wrapped taut around his midsection, already blossoming with fresh, crimson blood where his stitches were tearing under the strain. He was pale, sweating profusely from the sheer agony of standing, but his icy blue eyes were lit with a terrifying, demonic burn.

In his hand was a heavy matte-black pistol he had retrieved from his concealed ankle holster.

"DON'T TOUCH MY NURSE," Damian said coldly.

His voice wasn't a roar; it was a frostbite threat that made the two hitmen behind Victor instinctively freeze, their weapons wavering.

Victor sneered, tightening his grip on Elena’s arm, using her small frame as a partial shield. "Look at you, Cross. You can barely hold that iron. You're bleeding out right now. You think you can take three of us before you hit the floor?"

Damian’s jaw set into stone. He didn't lower the gun. He raised his gaze, locking eyes with Victor, and spoke four words that made every man in the room stop breathing.

"She is my wife."

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs so hard it felt like a physical blow. Her eyes widened as she stared at the side of Damian’s face. Wife? What was he playing at? They had known each other for less than seventy-two hours.

Before Victor or Elena could even process the shock, Damian delivered the second part of his impossible declaration—the lie so dangerous it turned the air into liquid glass.

"Kill her," Damian said softly, a dark, terrifying smile touching his bloodless lips, "and the Cross Syndicate doesn't just launch a turf war, Victor. Kill the woman carrying my heir, and my men will burn down every house, every business, and every family member associated with Calloway before the sun sets today. Try me."

Silence descended like a dropped guillotine.

Victor’s eyes darted frantically from Damian’s unblinking, murderous gaze down to Elena’s flat stomach, and then back to the blood dripping steadily from Damian’s fresh wound onto the floor. In the criminal underworld, touching a mob boss’s pregnant wife was an automatic death sentence—not just for the hitman, but for their entire bloodline. The syndicate council would execute Victor themselves just to avoid the total war Damian was threatening.

Victor’s fingers twitched against Elena’s arm. The calculation was visible behind his eyes: the risk was too high, the threat too absolute.

Slowly, bitterly, Victor released his grip on Elena, shoving her forward toward Damian.

"This isn't over, Cross," Victor spat through clenched teeth, backing toward the shattered front door while keeping his weapon trained on Damian. "You can't hide in this dump forever. And if I find out you're lying..."

"You know where my house is," Damian rasped, his voice dropping into a deadly register. "Get out before I decide my stitches can hold long enough to put a bullet between your eyes."

Victor snarled, motioning for his two men to retreat. They backed out of the clinic, their heavy boots crunching on the broken glass of the front door, vanishing into the gray morning mist of the alley.

The second the sound of their getaway car roared to life down the street, the lethal aura surrounding Damian shattered.

His gun clattered to the floor. His knees buckled, and his heavy frame collapsed forward.

"Damian!" Elena screamed, dropping her scalpel and lunging forward, catching his massive shoulders before his head hit the tile.

He fell into her lap, gasping for air, his chest heaving as dark red blood soaked rapidly through his fresh bandages. Elena pressed her bare hands hard against his torn flank, her breathing fast and ragged as she looked down into his pale, sweating face.

"You idiot!" she cried out, her eyes stinging with unexpected tears. "You absolute, arrogant idiot! Why did you say that?! Why did you tell him I was your wife?!"

Damian looked up at her through slitted, fading eyes. His hand, shaking violently from shock and pain, reached up, his blood-stained fingers barely brushing the side of her cheek.

May you like

"Because..." he whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the fluorescent lights, "...it was the only thing... that would keep you alive."

His hand slipped from her face, falling limply onto the floor as his eyes rolled back, plunging him into total darkness.
