Chapter 3 - The Desperate Counterattack

By the middle of the week, the news of Hale & Row’s catastrophic fallout dominated every financial news outlet in the country.

Bloomberg ran a front-page headline: "HALE & ROW ON THE BRINK: KEANE MERIDIAN TERMINATES MASTER LEASES."

The Wall Street Journal published a devastating expose detailing how the luxury retail brand’s meteoric rise had been secretly bankrolled by Everett Keane’s heiress, Audrey Keane Hale, and how her husband’s corporate arrogance had triggered an unprecedented asset recall.

Hale & Row’s stock plummeted by forty-five percent in forty-eight hours. Investors were panic-selling, suppliers were demanding immediate cash payments upon delivery, and news outlets were camping outside the company's headquarters.

Inside a chaotic conference room at Hale & Row, Weston sat slumped in a chair, his eyes bloodshot, his suit wrinkled. Empty coffee cups and scattered legal documents covered the table.

Claire stood near the whiteboard, pacing back and forth furiously, her designer phone pressed to her ear.

"What do you mean the bank rejected our loan restructuring?!" Claire screamed into the phone. "We have twenty million dollars in inventory as collateral! ... Hello? Hello?!"

She slammed the phone down onto the table, her face twisted in rage. "They hung up on me! The bankers are terrified of Everett Keane! No financial institution in Chicago will touch us while Audrey is pulling the strings!"

Weston buried his face in his hands, his voice muffled and broken. "She isn't just pulling strings, Claire. She owns the strings. Everything... everything was her."

Claire walked over to him, grabbing his shoulder tightly, her voice sharp and desperate. "Pull yourself together, Weston! We can't just give up! We still have options! Your mother and sister have public influence, and we have the media! If Audrey wants to ruin us, we will turn the public against her!"

Weston looked up, frowning. "What are you talking about?"

"She's a billionaire heiress destroying a self-made man's company out of personal jealousy!" Claire declared, her eyes glinting with ruthless ambition. "We launch a public relations campaign! We spin the narrative! We paint Audrey as a vindictive, ruthless trust-fund brat who is destroying hundreds of retail jobs just because her husband spent his anniversary working! The public loves an underdog story, Weston! The board will back us if we create enough public pressure!"

Weston hesitated. Part of him felt a deep, overwhelming guilt. Deep inside his chest, he knew the truth: Audrey had loved him unconditionally, and he had treated her terribly. But his massive ego, cultivated over five years of luxury and praise, refused to accept total defeat.

"Will... will it work?" Weston asked weakly.

"It has to work," Claire insisted, leaning down to look him in the eye. "I called a press conference for two o'clock today at the City Press Club. Your mother, Eleanor, and your sister, Chloe, are already on their way. We go on live television. We demand a freeze on Keane Meridian’s aggressive actions in the name of fair business ethics and employee protection!"

At 2:15 p.m., the grand ballroom of the Chicago Press Club was packed with over fifty journalists, news cameras, and flashing lights.

Weston stood at the podium, flanked by Claire, his mother Eleanor Hale—wearing an expensive tweed coat—and his younger sister Chloe.

Eleanor took the microphone first, putting on a performance worthy of an Oscar. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked directly into the news cameras.

"My son worked twenty hours a day to build Hale & Row from nothing!" Eleanor wept dramatically into the microphone. "And now, his wife, Audrey Keane, is using her family's vast wealth to crush him simply because he couldn't attend a dinner! She is cold, heartless, and spoiled! She never worked a day in her life, yet she wants to destroy the livelihoods of hundreds of hard-working employees!"

Chloe stepped forward, adding fuel to the fire. "Audrey always looked down on our family! She sat in her luxury home doing nothing while my brother built an empire! This is pure, vindictive malice from a woman who thinks money gives her the right to destroy lives!"

Weston then took the microphone, putting on a solemn, heartbroken expression. "I love my wife. I have always loved her. I admit I made mistakes balancing my corporate duties with my personal life. But using multi-billion-dollar corporate weapons to destroy a retail brand and target my executives... is wrong. I appeal to Audrey, and to Everett Keane, to sit down at the negotiating table for the sake of our employees."

The reporters shouted questions, cameras flashed frantically, and within minutes, the press conference was broadcast live across national news networks.

Claire stood in the background, a victorious, cruel smile playing on her lips. She believed they had turned the tide.
