Chapter 2 - The Iron Heiress

At 10:00 a.m., the forty-second floor of the Keane Meridian Tower in downtown Chicago was quiet, sleek, and bathed in bright sunlight.
Audrey sat at the head of a mahogany boardroom table, wearing a dark navy tailored trouser suit by Alexander McQueen. Her dark blonde hair was pulled back into a flawless, elegant bun. Her face was serene, devoid of any emotional turbulence, her eyes cold, sharp, and commanding.
Sitting to her right was Malcolm Price, a sixty-year-old veteran executive with silver hair and a razor-sharp intellect. Beside him sat a team of top-tier corporate attorneys.
"The initial compliance notices were delivered at precisely 6:00 a.m., Audrey," Malcolm reported, opening a leather file folder. "As expected, Hale & Row’s stock plummeted twelve percent in pre-market trading the moment rumors of the lease audits leaked to the press. Their credit facility with First National Bank is already flagged for review due to the loss of landlord guarantees."
Audrey took a slow sip of her black espresso, resting her hand on the polished table. The faded white scar on her left wrist gleamed beneath the soft lights.
"What is their current cash reserve?" Audrey asked calmly.
"Less than eighteen million," Malcolm replied. "Weston overleveraged the firm to finance the Lakeshore redevelopment. He was relying entirely on Keane Meridian’s rent subsidies to maintain liquidity through the fourth quarter. Without our backing, Hale & Row will run out of cash in less than forty-five days."
"Good," Audrey said softly, setting her cup down without a sound. "Begin Phase Two. Issue a formal recall on the emergency inventory loan backed by the Meridian Holding Trust."
"Audrey," Malcolm hesitated slightly, looking at her with fatherly concern. "That loan is valued at twenty-two million dollars. Calling it early will force Hale & Row into technical default by next Friday."
"He wanted domestic surprises," Audrey murmured, her lips curving into a distant, icy smile. "I'm simply delivering."
Before Malcolm could answer, the glass doors of the executive floor rattled.
"I need to see her! Get your hands off me!"
Weston’s voice echoed loudly down the pristine hallway. Seconds later, the doors burst open. Weston shoved past two security guards, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled, his eyes wide with frantic desperation. Behind him, looking pale and thoroughly shaken, stood Claire.
"Audrey!" Weston shouted, breathing heavily as he stumbled into the boardroom. "Audrey, what the hell is going on?!"
The security guards moved to tackle him, but Audrey calmly held up one gloved hand.
"It's fine, gentlemen," Audrey said smoothly. "Give us the room."
The guards and attorneys bowed heads and stepped out, closing the double glass doors behind them, leaving only Audrey, Malcolm, Weston, and Claire inside the grand room.
Weston stared at Audrey as if he were seeing a ghost. For five years, he had seen her in oversized sweaters, cooking dinners, quietly attending his company events, standing in the shadows while he took the spotlight. He had never seen her sitting at the head of a multi-billion-dollar boardroom, surrounded by executive power, looking like an absolute queen.
"Audrey..." Weston stammered, stepping toward the table. "Arthur called me... Keane Meridian is revoking our leases! They're auditing our stores! Tell me this is a mistake! Tell me you didn't do this!"
Audrey tilted her head, watching him with detached curiosity. "Why would it be a mistake, Weston? A landlord has every right to enforce the strict terms of its commercial contracts."
"Contracts?!" Weston yelled, slamming his hands onto the mahogany table. "We are married, Audrey! You are my wife! How could you do this to my company?! Do you have any idea how hard I worked to build Hale & Row?!"
Audrey slowly stood up. The movement was so graceful, yet so commanding, that Weston instinctively took a step back.
"You built nothing alone, Weston," Audrey said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, crystalline whisper. "You built Hale & Row on my money, my family’s real estate, and my silent protection. For five years, I let you believe you were a self-made titan because I loved you. I let my mother-in-law call me lazy. I let your sister mock my ambition. I let your chief strategy officer call me a stay-at-home burden."
She shifted her gaze cold as ice onto Claire, who shrank back slightly under Audrey’s piercing eyes.
"Audrey, please..." Weston’s voice trembled, realization crashing down upon him like a tidal wave. "I'm sorry about last night! I was stressed! The Lakeshore deal was overwhelming, and—"
"Last night wasn't an accident, Weston," Audrey interrupted, walking slowly around the table toward him. "Last night was the moment you showed me who you truly are. You locked your wife out in the cold on her fifth anniversary so another woman wouldn't feel uncomfortable wearing a thirty-eight-thousand-dollar diamond necklace bought with my money."
Weston’s face turned ghostly white. "The necklace... you saw the receipt?"
"I saw everything," Audrey replied softly. "I saw your disloyalty. I saw your arrogance. And most importantly, I saw how easily you discarded the woman who saved your life in a burning building."
She pulled off her right glove, exposing the scar across her left wrist to the bright light.
Weston stared at the scar, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with sudden tears of shame. "Audrey... please. I love you. We can fix this! Let's go home. Let's talk about this privately!"
"Home?" Audrey let out a soft, bitter laugh. "The penthouse on Fifth Avenue belongs to Keane Meridian. You have until 5:00 p.m. today to remove your personal belongings. After that, the locks will be changed."

"You're evicting me from our home?!" Weston gasped in sheer horror.
"It was never our home, Weston," Audrey said, stepping closer until she was standing inches from his pale face. "It was my property. Just like Hale & Row’s flagship locations. Just like your credit line. You thought you were a king, Weston. But you were merely living in my castle. And today, I am taking back my keys."
