Chapter 5 - A MOTHER'S COURAGE

Three months passed.

Winter set in over New York, blanketing the Valente estate in crisp white snow. The atmosphere inside the grand house had transformed completely. The heavy, intimidating silence had been replaced by warmth, life, and the frequent sound of a toddler’s laughter echoing through the halls.

As Chief Estate Manager, I had completely restructured the domestic operations, streamlining budgets and improving working conditions for all staff members.

Dominic’s inner circle had come to respect me not just as an employee, but as a core figure of the estate. And Dominic himself had changed. He spent less time locked away in his study and more time having dinner in the dining hall with Sophie and me.

One evening, after Sophie had fallen asleep in her new suite in the main wing, Dominic invited me to walk through the glass conservatory.

The moon reflected brightly off the snow outside.

"You look happy, Elena," Dominic said, walking beside me with his hands in his pockets.

"We are happy, Dominic," I smiled, looking up at him. "For the first time in my life, I don't wake up afraid of tomorrow."

Dominic paused near a blooming winter orchid. "When Sophie brought me that drawing three months ago... she asked if I could make the bad man disappear."

"I remember," I murmured.

"I spent my whole life building power so people would fear me," Dominic reflected quietly, his voice full of emotion. "But when that little girl looked up at me without an ounce of fear, asking for help... I realized what power is actually meant for. It’s not to build an empire of fear. It’s to protect the innocence of those who need it most."

He stepped closer, taking my hand gently into his.

"You and Sophie gave this house a soul, Elena," Dominic said softly, his dark eyes searching mine. "I don't ever want either of you to leave."
