Chapter 3 - THE TRAP AT NORTH GATE

By 11:30 PM, the storm outside had escalated into a full gale. Thunder rattled the windowpanes of the third-floor guest suite.

Sophie was sound asleep under a heavy duvet, her stuffed rabbit tucked safely under her chin. I sat beside her, my hands shaking as I watched the clock on the mantle tick toward midnight.

Downstairs, Dominic was executing his counter-operation.

Instead of hiding, Dominic used Marcus’s extortion plot to bait Moretti’s crew into making a fatal mistake. Using a duplicate keycard provided by security, Leo planted a tracked decoy inside a fake drop bag near the north fence line.

Through the encrypted security monitor in the guest room, I watched the silent live feed of the north gate.

A figure in a dark raincoat emerged from the black tree line—Marcus. He crawled toward the designated drop spot, his hands trembling as he reached for the bag.

The moment his fingers touched the canvas leather, floodlights bathed the entire fence line in blinding white light.

Four black SUVs surrounded the perimeter within seconds. Dominic’s tactical team moved with surgical precision, disarming Marcus before he could even draw his weapon.

Moments later, the study doors opened downstairs. Marcus was brought into the basement holding cell, completely neutralized without a single shot fired on estate grounds.

Dominic walked up the stairs to the guest suite personally to inform me.

He tapped gently on the door before stepping inside. He took off his damp overcoat, hanging it near the entrance.

"Marcus is in custody," Dominic said quietly, walking over to the foot of the bed. "He gave up Moretti’s location and the full plan within five minutes. Federal authorities and my team are wrapping up Moretti’s local cells as we speak."

I collapsed back into the armchair, covering my face with my hands as tears of pure relief streamed down my cheeks. "It’s over... it’s finally over."

"It is," Dominic confirmed. He looked down at Sophie, who stirred slightly in her sleep, smiling as she hugged her rabbit.
