Chapter 4 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the golden autumn leaves scattered across the Valente estate gardens.

I brought Dominic his morning coffee in the study, just as I had done for two years. But the dynamic between us had irrevocably shifted.

He was sitting at his desk, reviewing legal documents with a soft pair of reading glasses on. When he saw me enter, he immediately put down his pen and set his glasses aside.

"Elena. Sit down, please."

I set the tray on the desk and took a seat in one of the leather armchairs across from him.

"I’ve spent the morning reviewing your employment records and your personal background," Dominic began, his tone serious yet gentle. "You have a degree in hospitality management and accounting. Why were you working as a live-in housekeeper?"

I looked down at my hands. "After Marcus went to prison, he left me with mountain-loads of debt forged in my name. I lost my apartment, my car, and my credit score was destroyed. Cleaning your estate was the only job that offered housing and safety for Sophie."

Dominic shook his head slowly. "You were overqualified, underprotected, and suffering in silence right under my roof."

He pulled out a signed document from his desk drawer and slid it across to me.

"Effective today, your employment as a housekeeper is terminated," Dominic stated clearly.

My heart sank. "Mr. Valente—"

"And effective today," he continued, a rare warmth appearing at the corner of his lips, "you are appointed as the Chief Estate Manager for all Valente residential properties. You will oversee the administrative staff, financial budgeting, and vendor contracts. The position comes with a full corporate salary, health benefits, and permanent housing on the estate grounds."

I stared at the document in shock. The salary listed was more than five times what I made as a maid.

May you like

"Dominic... I don't know what to say," I stammered, using his first name for the first time.

"Say you accept," he replied softly. "Because Sophie deserves stability—and so do you."
