Chapter 7 - Whispers in the DarkThe private study of the Santoro estate on the city's north side was shrouded in shadows, lit only by the amber glow of a desk lamp and the flickering neon signs of the Chicago skyline bleeding through the heavy velvet drapes.

Rafael sat behind his grandfather’s old walnut desk, staring at a thick dossier that Abel had silently placed before him ten minutes ago.
Inside the file were bank records, encrypted emails, and wire transfers tracing straight from Julian Vance’s offshore accounts directly to a boutique fashion firm in Milan—registered under Celeste Whitlock’s private alias.
The door opened with a soft click. Celeste walked into the study, wearing a silk robe, her face freshly washed and devoid of makeup, looking fragile and vulnerable. She had abandoned the hard, aggressive armor she wore in public.
“You haven't come up to the penthouse,” she said softly, walking over to the desk and placing a glass of scotch beside his hand. “It’s past midnight, Rafael.”
Rafael didn't touch the glass. He slowly closed the dossier and looked up at her. His eyes were cold, devoid of the warmth or affection a man should feel toward the woman he was scheduled to marry in three weeks.
“You knew about Julian’s operation,” Rafael stated. It wasn't a question.
Celeste froze. Her hand hovered over the edge of the desk for a second before she slowly withdrew it, letting out a quiet, bitter laugh.
“You ran the numbers,” she whispered, her voice losing its melodic sweetness, hardening into something sharp and resentful. “Of course you did. You investigate everything like it’s a criminal conspiracy.”
“It was a criminal conspiracy,” Rafael corrected, standing up slowly. He towered over her, his presence suffocating. “He was stealing from the waitstaff, Celeste. People who work sixteen-hour shifts just to survive. And you were taking a cut to fund your private accounts.”
“My accounts?!” Celeste suddenly flared up, her eyes flashing with anger. “You keep me on a financial leash, Rafael! Every designer bag, every trip, every charity gala—I have to justify it to your accountants like I’m a child asking for allowance! Julian offered a way to have a little independence, and you act like I committed murder!”
“You preyed on people who can't fight back,” Rafael said, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that signaled the end of all discussion. “You broke the only rule that matters.”
Celeste stared at him, her chest heaving, realization finally dawning on her. The engagement wasn't just strained; it was dead.
“You’re going to cancel the wedding,” she said, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and humiliation. “After all the press, after all the preparations, after inviting half of Chicago’s elite... you’re going to dump me over a nameless, pathetic waitress?”
“The wedding is off,” Rafael said flatly. “Pack your things tonight, Celeste. Abel will have a car ready to take you wherever you want to go by morning.”
Celeste stepped back, her face twisting into an expression of pure venom. “You think you’re untouchable, Rafael. You think your precious rules and your code of honor make you a king. But a king sitting alone in an empty tower isn't a ruler. He’s just a target. And there are people out there who have been waiting a very long time to watch you fall.”

She turned on her heel and stormed out of the study, slamming the heavy oak door behind her with a resounding crash that echoed through the silent mansion.
Rafael stood alone in the dark room. He poured himself a finger of scotch, raising the glass slightly toward the empty doorway, knowing full well that Celeste’s parting words weren't an empty threat.
