Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the LobbyThe ground-floor lobby of Santoro Tower was a cathedral of polished granite and gleaming brass, usually filled with the gentle hum of upscale tourists, corporate executives, and the soft chime of elevator bells. But today, the lobby felt like a war zone.

A small crowd had gathered near the security gates. At the center of it stood Marin Hollis.

She looked entirely out of place among the towering marble columns. Her hair was messy, escaping the tight bun she usually wore. Her uniform was stained with bleach and coffee from the night shift, and her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen with tears. In her trembling hands, she clutched a cardboard box filled with a few personal items—a worn notepad, a family photo, and her service gloves.

Two burly corporate security guards stood a few feet away, looking uncomfortable, while a middle-aged HR manager stood blocking her path to the exit.

“I didn't steal anything!” Marin’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she looked around at the staring faces of wealthy patrons and executives. “Check the logs again! I worked every single hour! My mother’s care facility bill is due tomorrow—if you withhold my final paycheck, they’ll evict her! Please!”

“Miss Hollis, company policy dictates that pending an internal financial audit, all final disbursements are frozen,” the HR manager recited coldly, reading from a tablet like a machine. “Please leave the premises voluntarily, or we will be forced to have security escort you out.”

“Escort her out of where?”

The cold, authoritative voice cut through the murmurs of the lobby like a sharp blade.

The crowd instantly parted, whispering nervously as Rafael Santoro walked through the center of the lobby, his long black coat trailing behind him. Abel Ferraro followed closely at his right shoulder, scanning the room with sharp, protective eyes.

Marin turned around, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the head of the entire empire walking directly toward her. She shrank back instinctively, clutching her cardboard box tighter against her chest.

“Mr... Mr. Santoro,” she whispered, her voice shaking violently. “I’m sorry. I didn't mean to cause a scene. I was just trying to get my pay—just what I worked for—”

Rafael stopped two feet away from her. He looked down at the box in her arms, then at her red-rimmed eyes, and finally down at her left hand, where the faint, purplish bruise of Julian’s grip was still visible beneath the frayed edge of her sleeve.

The temperature in the lobby seemed to drop instantly.

“Who gave the order to freeze her pay?” Rafael asked, not looking at Marin, but turning his dark, piercing gaze directly onto the HR manager.

The manager swallowed hard, sweating profusely under Rafael’s stare. “Sir? That... that was standard procedure under the previous operational directive issued by... by Julian Vance.”

“Julian Vance is no longer with this company,” Rafael said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent lobby. “He was fired this morning for theft and workplace assault.”

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered crowd.

Rafael turned his attention back to Marin. His expression softened—just a fraction, enough to reveal the human being beneath the untouchable mob boss persona.

“Miss Hollis,” Rafael said gently, his voice surprisingly warm in the cavernous room. “You are not fired. You are reinstated immediately. With back pay, full hazard bonuses, and all medical expenses for your mother covered by the Santoro Foundation, effective immediately.”

Marin stared at him, her jaw dropping open in utter disbelief. Tears streamed freely down her pale cheeks. “I... I don't understand... Why?”

“Because in my house,” Rafael said, holding her gaze steadily, “we have one rule. And nobody gets to break it while wearing a Santoro badge.”

Before Marin could answer, the glass revolving doors of the lobby spun rapidly, and a sharp, furious voice rang out from behind the crowd.

“Rafael! Have you completely lost your mind?!”
