Chapter 6 - Cracks in the Glass EmpireCeleste Whitlock marched across the polished granite lobby, her heels clicking like gunshots against the stone. Her face was flushed with embarrassment and rage, her perfectly manicured hands balled into tight fists at her sides. Dozens of wealthy patrons and corporate employees stopped in their tracks, staring in stunned silence as the future Mrs. Santoro made a public scene.

“Celeste,” Rafael warned, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he turned to face her. “Not here.”
“I don’t care where we are!” Celeste shouted, stopping just inches away from him, her chest heaving. She glared past Rafael at Marin, who shrank back, clutching her cardboard box even tighter. “You are making a public spectacle out of a common employee! You fired Julian—a trusted asset—and now you’re standing here playing savior to a nobody, turning our entire company into a laughingstock!”
The lobby fell into a breathless hush. No one had ever spoken to Rafael Santoro like that in public, let alone his own fiancée.
Rafael didn't raise his voice. He didn't blink. He simply looked at Celeste with an unsettling, chilling calm.
“Julian was a thief,” Rafael said clearly, ensuring every word echoed across the marble pillars. “He stole from people who couldn't defend themselves. If you didn't know that, then you were blind. If you did know it, then we have a much bigger problem.”
Celeste’s breath hitched. For a brief second, the color vanished from her cheeks, exposing the raw panic beneath her carefully constructed facade. She realized she had pushed too hard, exposed too much of her own desperation in front of an audience.
“I... I care about our reputation, Rafael,” she recovered, lowering her voice into a desperate, trembling plea, attempting to reach out and touch his arm. “Our wedding is in three weeks. The press is watching every move we make. Don't humiliate me like this over a waitress.”
Rafael looked down at her hand hovering near his sleeve, then stepped back just enough to avoid her touch.
“My reputation is built on rules, Celeste,” Rafael said quietly. “And the moment we stop protecting the vulnerable is the moment the empire collapses from the inside. Go back upstairs. We will discuss this tonight in the penthouse.”
Celeste’s eyes burned with humiliation and pure, unadulterated hatred. She shot one venomous glare at Marin before turning on her heel and marching back toward the private elevators, the sound of her heels echoing furiously against the marble.
The lobby remained frozen.
Rafael turned back to Marin, who was still standing there, trembling slightly from the emotional shock of the last ten minutes.
“Abel,” Rafael instructed, nodding toward his oldest friend.
“Already on it, boss,” Abel said, stepping forward with a kind, reassuring smile that contrasted sharply with his intimidating frame. He gently placed a hand under Marin’s elbow to steady her. “Come on, young lady. Let’s get you out of this lobby, get your mother’s care transfer sorted out, and make sure you get a hot meal and some real rest.”
Marin looked up at Rafael one last time, her lips trembling as she tried to form words. “Thank you, Mr. Santoro... I... I don't know how I’ll ever repay you.”

“You don't have to,” Rafael said softly. “Just go home and sleep safely tonight.”
As Abel escorted Marin toward a side exit, Rafael stood alone in the center of the lobby. He knew the storm was only just beginning. Celeste’s desperate defense of Julian wasn't just about corporate loyalty; it was a symptom of something rotting deeper within his inner circle. And down in the shadows of Chicago, old enemies were starting to notice that the great Rafael Santoro had finally found something—or someone—he was willing to protect at all costs.
