Chapter 8 - The Ascent

Two massive corporate security guards materialized out of nowhere, grabbing Everett by the arms before he could even register what was happening.
"No! No, Claire, please! You can't do this to me! I'm your husband!" Everett shrieked, thrashing wildly as they hoisted him off his knees and dragged him backward toward the elevator.
"We're divorced, Everett," I called out coolly as the elevator doors slid open. "And my name is Miss Sutton."
The doors slid shut, cutting off his frantic, muffled screams as he descended fifty floors straight down to the cold, unforgiving pavement of Manhattan.
I walked back to my desk, smoothing down the front of my ivory pantsuit, and gazed out at the sprawling, unbroken empire stretching out beneath my feet.
The door to my office opened quietly, and Arthur Vance stepped inside, holding a thick leather-bound folio containing our final Q1 acquisition plans.

"He's gone?" Arthur asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Permanently," I replied, turning around with a calm, radiant smile. "Now, Mr. Vance... let's talk about our global expansion strategy."
