Chapter 5 - The Ashes of an Empire

By midnight, the glittering halls of the Plaza Hotel had emptied of guests, but my work was only just beginning.

I sat at the head of the executive boardroom on the fiftoth floor of Hale Tower—which was now officially being renamed Sutton Global Holdings—surrounded by Arthur Vance, Nathan, and a team of forensic accountants who had been quietly compiling dossiers on the Hale family's financial embezzlement for the past six months.

"The asset seizure at the Westchester estate is complete, Madam Chairwoman," Nathan reported, sliding a tablet across the polished mahogany table. "All personal accounts belonging to Everett and Eleanor Hale have been locked. Their luxury vehicles are currently impounded at our corporate garage. As for Vanessa..."

"What about her?" I asked, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea.

"She packed her designer bags within ten minutes of being escorted off the property," Nathan smirked faintly. "The moment she realized Everett had zero access to funds, she called an Uber, blocked his number, and was last seen heading toward JFK Airport."

I couldn't help a dry, humorless chuckle. "Loyalty bought with my money always had a very short shelf life."

Arthur Vance leaned forward, resting his weathered hands on the table. "Claire—if I may call you that—the board is prepared to ratify you as the permanent Chief Executive Officer and Chairwoman of the entire conglomerate. But I have to ask... how did you manage to keep your identity hidden for an entire decade? Everyone in the city thought Everett was the sole heir to the Hale fortune."

I set my teacup down, looking out the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the glittering neon canyons of Manhattan below.

"My father, Richard Sutton, founded Sutton Global before he passed away," I explained calmly. "He knew that if he handed the empire to me straight out of college, the old guard of the corporate world—men like the ones sitting on this board—would never take a twenty-one-year-old woman seriously. He advised me to find a partner, test his character, and let him run the subsidiary under supervision while I built the true infrastructure from the background."

I turned my gaze back to Arthur, whose eyes widened in sudden realization.

"I chose Everett because he interviewed well at my father’s golf club," I continued, a cold shadow crossing my face. "I thought arrogance could be tempered with loyalty. I was wrong. He didn't just fail the test; he weaponized my patience against me. So, I let him hang himself with his own corporate rope."

"And a magnificent hanging it was," Arthur laughed, a deep, resonant sound of pure professional admiration. "What are your orders for tomorrow's opening bell?"

"We liquidate every non-performing asset Everett acquired through fraudulent loans," I commanded, my voice steady and unyielding. "We audit every subsidiary. And we announce to the global press that Sutton Global Holdings is officially under new management—mine."
