Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept

ONE YEAR LATER

The spring sun broke over the Brooklyn waterfront, casting a brilliant golden light across the sparkling blue waters of the East River.

Bellarosa—the tiny Italian restaurant where my desperate journey had begun—was completely closed to the public for a private celebration.

White roses and silk ribbons adorned the wooden tables. Outside, discreet security guards kept the street clear, but inside, the room was filled with laughter, delicious food, and warmth.

I stood near the large bay window, wearing a simple, breathtaking white lace wedding dress that hugged my curves, my dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small white blossoms.

Behind me, seven-year-old Zach was wearing a miniature black tuxedo, proudly showing off his shiny silver ring-bearer pillow to Maria and Dante.

"Look, Dante!" Zach giggled happily. "I get to carry the real gold rings! Dad said if I drop them, I have to do fifty push-ups!"

Dante laughed softly, patting the boy's shoulder. "You'll do fine, boss. Just keep your eyes on the altar."

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

I leaned my back against Michael’s broad chest, letting out a deep, contented sigh as he rested his chin against my shoulder. He looked impossibly handsome in his classic black wedding tuxedo, smelling of cedarwood and costly cologne.

"Are you nervous, my love?" Michael murmured softly, pressing a gentle kiss against the side of my neck.

"Not at all," I smiled, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his lapels, looking up into his striking gray eyes. "I'm just thinking about how crazy my life became the moment I picked up that dented frying pan in the back room."

Michael smiled—a deep, magnificent smile that lit up his handsome face. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a delicate silver pinky ring set with a flawless small diamond.

"One year ago, a brave six-year-old boy made a pinky promise to save a princess from a witch," Michael whispered, taking my small pinky finger and sliding the delicate ring onto it. "He didn't know that his father would fall hopelessly in love with that same princess."

Tears of pure happiness welled up in my hazel eyes. "Michael..."

"You brought life back into my dead world, Aurora," Michael whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, profound emotion. "You gave my son a mother, and you gave me a reason to build a peaceful future instead of an empire of blood. I love you, Aurora Vance. Today, tomorrow, and forever."

"I love you, Michael," I answered softly, stepping up on my tiptoes to press my lips against his in a deep, tender kiss that sealed our souls together.

"Hey!" Zach’s voice shouted excitedly from the center of the room. "No kissing until the priest says so! Come on, we have to do the pinky promise!"

Michael laughed softly, pulling away from the kiss, and took my hand as we walked toward our son.

Zach held out his small finger. Michael held out his. And I held out mine.

Three pinkies hooked together under the warm Brooklyn sun—a simple, unbreakable promise that had saved three lives, destroyed an empire of darkness, and built an everlasting family.
