Chapter 1 - The Godfather’s Proposal

The heavy silence inside the cramped storage room of Bellarosa felt suffocating.

Michael Moretti—the shadow king of the East Coast syndicate, a man whose name made hardened criminals pale—stood in the doorway, his tall frame blocking out the warm light from the kitchen. His charcoal wool coat was immaculately tailored, his dark hair touched with silver at the temples, and his piercing gray eyes felt like ice pressed against my neck.

Behind him stood two broad-shouldered men in dark suits, their right hands buried inside their leather jackets, hovering near concealed shoulder holsters.

My knuckles turned white around the handle of the dented frying pan. I kept my body firmly planted in front of six-year-old Zach, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs.

Michael’s cold gaze lingered on the blood on my lower lip, shifted down to the dark purple bruises encircling my thin wrists, and finally rested on my small, trembling hand tightly holding his son's pinky.

"Zach," Michael said, his voice a low, reverberating baritone that commanded instant obedience without ever needing to raise his volume. "Step back from the young lady."

Zach didn't move. Instead, he puffed out his chest, stepping half an inch closer to my side, his superhero pajamas sticking out beneath his expensive designer coat.

"No, Dad," Zach declared with absolute, unwavering toddler confidence. "She's my fiancee now. We made a pinky promise. You said a Moretti never breaks a pinky promise."

One of the bodyguards behind Michael let out a quick, involuntary cough, instantly masking it by straightening his tie.

Michael didn't laugh. His expression remained unreadable, smooth as polished marble, though a sharp glint of intense interest flared in his gray eyes.

"Is that so?" Michael murmured, taking one slow, deliberate step into the storage room. The sheer weight of his presence made the air in the small room grow cold. "And does your... fiancee... have a last name, Zach?"

"Aurora," I found my voice, raspy and trembling from exhaustion, but determined to keep my footing. "Aurora Vance. And I don't know who you are, sir, but your son was hiding behind these flour sacks because he didn't want to go to the doctor tomorrow."

Michael raised a single dark eyebrow. "He told you that, did he?"

Before I could reply, the kitchen door behind Michael’s men burst open with a loud, metallic crash.

Regina’s shrill, voice cut through the air. "I don't care who is back there! Aurora, get your pathetic little ass out here right now! Tony’s guys are losing their patience, and if I don't get my fifty thousand dollars, I'm going to tell them to break your legs!"

Regina rounded the corner into the storage hallway, flanked by two greasy, broad-shouldered loan sharks wearing leather jackets—Tony’s enforcers.

"There you are, you ungrateful little—" Regina stopped dead in her tracks.

Her face drained of all color. The anger in her eyes instantly vanished, replaced by a sheer, gut-wrenching terror so intense she actually stumbled backward into the wall.

Tony’s two enforcers froze instantly. Their eyes widened as they recognized the imposing figure standing inside the storage room doorway. The two thugs immediately dropped their hands to their sides, bowing their heads in deep, frantic panic.

"M-Mr. Moretti..." one of the loan sharks stuttered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Sir... we... we didn't know you were here. We were just... settling a personal matter with a debtor."

Michael didn't turn around. He didn't even look at them. He kept his eyes locked onto mine.

"Fifty thousand dollars," Michael said softly, his tone dangerously calm. "Is that what you owe these insects, Miss Vance?"

"I don't owe them a single penny," I said, my voice rising with righteous fury despite my trembling knees. "My stepmother gambled away my father's life insurance money, lost her house, and now she wants to sell me to Tony to clear her tab."

Michael turned slowly, facing Regina and the two terrified thugs. The atmosphere in the hallway dropped below freezing.

"Regina Vance," Michael murmured, pronouncing her name like a judge reading a death sentence. "And Tony’s pigs. Threatening a woman inside Bellarosa—a establishment under the personal protection of the Moretti family."

Regina sank to her knees on the dirty tile floor, trembling violently. "Mr. Moretti, please! I didn't know! She's my stepdaughter, she belongs to me—"

"No human being belongs to you," Michael cut her off, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register. He motioned casually with his index finger to his lead bodyguard. "Dante."

"Sir?" Dante replied instantly.

"Pay Tony his fifty thousand dollars," Michael ordered smoothly. "And then inform him that if Regina Vance or any of his men ever set foot in Brooklyn again, or if they ever speak Miss Vance's name, I will personally feed them to the crabs in the East River."

Dante bowed his head. "Understood, boss."

Regina gasped in relief, but before she could speak, Michael looked down at her with pure, unadulterated coldness.

"Get out of my sight before I change my mind about your tongue," Michael commanded.

Regina and the two loan sharks scrambled backward like frightened rats, practically knocking each other over as they fled through the restaurant's back door.

The storage room returned to silence.

Michael turned back to me. He looked at my battered shoes, my frayed jacket, the blood on my lip, and the fierce, protective way I was still holding his son’s hand.

"Well, Miss Vance," Michael said softly, a tiny, mysterious smile touching the corner of his lips. "It seems my son has made a binding agreement. A Moretti always honors his debts... and his promises."
