Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gala

Two weeks passed like a surreal dream.

I quickly adapted to life inside the fortress. During the days, I spent my time tutoring Zach, playing games in the grand gardens, and watching the color return to his cheeks. For the first time since his mother had passed away three years ago from illness, Zach was laughing, eating, and talking constantly.

And then there was Michael.

The feared mafia Don was a ghost to the outside world, but inside these walls, he was a man burdened by immense responsibility. Every evening, after long hours of managing shipping lines, real estate holdings, and underworld negotiations, he would join Zach and me in the library for dinner.

We talked about books, music, and art. Beneath his cold, intimidating exterior, I discovered a brilliant, deeply cultured man who carried the heavy weight of a dangerous empire solely to protect his son.

A subtle, undeniable electric charge began to grow between us. Long looks across the dining table, a lingering touch of his hand on the small of my back when he guided me through the hallways, the soft, low sound of his voice speaking my name in the late evening hours.

On a rainy Thursday night, the peace was shattered.

"There's a problem," Michael declared, stepping into the private study where I was reading. He was wearing a dark, tailored tuxedo that made him look impossibly broad and striking.

I set my book down. "What happened?"

"Viktor Volkov—the head of the Russian syndicate—is hosting an exclusive charity gala tonight at the Plaza Hotel," Michael explained, his jaw tight. "He announced to the board of regional families that he has acquired Arthur Vance's ledger and intends to use it to seize control of my Brooklyn docks."

My stomach dropped. "Does he really have it?"

"No," Michael said, walking over to me and holding out a small, velvet box. "Because your father didn't hide the ledger in an offshore account, Aurora. He hid the encryption key inside this necklace—the one he gave you on your sixteenth birthday, which Regina pawned two months ago. My men recovered it this afternoon."

I gasped, looking down at the silver locket resting inside the velvet box.

"Volkov is bluffing," Michael continued, his eyes burning into mine. "He wants to draw me out. He believes I am weak because I have been searching for you. Tonight, I am going to the gala to break him once and for all."

He opened his hand, offering me a stunning, emerald-green silk evening gown.

"I need a queen by my side tonight, Aurora," Michael whispered, his voice dark and velvety. "Volkov thinks you are a helpless girl running from debt collectors. I want him to see that you are under the protection of the Moretti family."

I looked at the emerald dress, then at the man standing before me—a man who had given me safety, dignity, and a home when I had nothing.

"I'll get dressed," I said softly, a brave smile touching my lips.
