Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

With only three days left before the court hearing, the atmosphere inside the Foster estate grew increasingly tense.

Daniel spent long hours in his study reviewing security footage and financial logs, determined to find the mole Julian Vance had mentioned.

On Friday evening, a heavy thunderstorm slammed into New York once again, mirroring the night I had arrived. The power in the mansion flickered before cutting out entirely, plunging the sprawling house into darkness.

The emergency generators kicked on, throwing long, eerie shadows across the hallways.

I was tucking the boys into bed when I noticed Toby looking out the window toward the courtyard.

"Miss Emily," Toby whispered, pointing down at the rain-soaked gardens. "Mrs. Gable is walking near the side gate with a flashlight."

Mrs. Gable was the senior housekeeper—the woman who had greeted me with pity on my very first day.

My instincts screamed at me. I instructed the boys to stay in their room, locked the door from the inside, and slipped down the back service stairs.

Outside in the freezing rain, Mrs. Gable stood near the brick perimeter wall, handing a small black USB drive to a man in a dark rain slicker.

"That's everything," Mrs. Gable said, her voice shaking against the wind. "The safe codes, the security patrol schedules, and the financial audit logs. Tell Vance he needs to wire the rest of the money tonight."

"He will," the man replied, reaching for the drive.

"I wouldn’t take another step if I were you," a deep voice boomed through the rain.

Daniel stepped out from the shadow of the rose arches, holding an umbrella, flanked by four armed security guards.

Mrs. Gable gasped, dropping her flashlight into the mud. "Daniel... I... I had to! Vance promised to clear my son's gambling debts!"

"You betrayed my family, Martha," Daniel said, his voice cold as ice. "I treated you like family for fifteen years. Security, take her to the gate and hand her over to the federal authorities waiting outside."

As the guards led the sobbing housekeeper away, Daniel turned to the man in the rain slicker. The man tried to run, but Daniel closed the distance instantly, knocking him to the muddy ground with a single, powerful strike and retrieving the USB drive.

I stepped out from under the patio overhang, rain soaking my hair.

Daniel walked over to me, holding the umbrella over my head to shield me from the downpour. His eyes were dark with pain, but when he looked at me, the tension in his face softened.

"Are the boys safe?" he asked quietly.

"They're safe upstairs," I replied, looking into his eyes. "Daniel... it's over now. The leak is fixed."

"Not yet," Daniel whispered, taking my face in his warm, sturdy hands. "Vance will make his final move at the board meeting on Monday. But tonight... tonight I just need to know you're safe."

Standing in the cold rain beneath the flickering garden lights, Daniel leaned down and pressed his lips to mine—a deep, desperate, and fiercely protective kiss that sent a wave of heat surging through my body.

When he pulled back, his dark eyes searched mine. "I'm not letting Vance win. And I'm not letting your ex-husband take your daughter."
