Chapter 2 - The Secret in the West Wing

My first week at the Foster estate was an exercise in strategic defense.

I quickly learned the boys' names and their distinct roles in the household chaos. Leo was the mastermind who planned their traps; Sam was the tactical executor; Luke was the distraction artist; and Toby was the quiet observer who gathered intelligence.

They weren't evil kids—they were deeply grieving, abandoned children who used bad behavior as a shield to keep anyone from getting close enough to hurt them again. Their mother had passed away two years ago, and Daniel, consumed by his corporate empire and the dangerous undercurrents of his business, had built an emotional wall between himself and his sons.

By Friday, the kitchen was spotless, bedtimes were strictly enforced at 8:00 PM, and the boys had started waiting by the door for me in the morning instead of setting booby traps.

However, the dark clouds surrounding the Foster family were far from gone.

It was 11:00 PM on Thursday night when I woke to the sound of a heavy door slamming in the west wing of the mansion—a wing Daniel had explicitly forbidden me from entering.

Wearing my robe, I walked quietly down the marble hallway. The faint scent of cigar smoke and damp rain drifted through the corridor. I rounded the corner and paused behind a stone pillar.

Daniel was standing near a massive iron door, his jacket off, his white shirt stained with dirt. Standing across from him was a tall, sharp-featured man wearing an expensive charcoal suit.

It was Julian Vance—Daniel’s primary business rival and a notorious figure in New York’s private logistics sector.

"You're running out of time, Daniel," Julian sneered, his voice cutting through the quiet hall. "The board meeting is in ten days. If you don't sign over the harbor shipping routes, those four little boys of yours might lose more than just their nanny."

Daniel stepped forward, his body radiating a terrifying, lethal aura. He grabbed Julian by his lapels, pinning him against the wall with effortless strength.

"If you ever mention my sons again, Julian," Daniel growled in a voice so low it gave me shivers, "I won't just ruin your company. I will erase you from this city."

"Check your perimeter, Foster," Julian laughed softly, unbothered by the threat. "You think you're safe in this fortress? Someone inside this house is already taking my money."

Julian shoved Daniel back and walked toward the side exit, disappearing into the dark night.

Daniel stood alone in the hallway, his hands clenching into tight fists. He turned his head slightly, his sharp eyes catching my shadow against the stone pillar.

"Step out, Emily," he commanded quietly.

I stepped into the light, my heart pounding against my ribs. "I heard shouting. I wanted to make sure the boys were safe."

Daniel walked toward me, stopping only inches away. The cold, distant billionaire I had met a week ago looked exhausted, carrying a weight that could crush an ordinary man.

"You shouldn't be in this wing," he said softly.

"Who was that man, Mr. Foster?" I asked directly. "Is my safety—and my daughter’s safety—at risk in this house?"

Daniel looked down at me, his expression softening just a fraction. He reached out, his thumb gently catching a stray lock of hair behind my ear before he pulled his hand back.

"I will burn New York to the ground before I let anyone hurt you or the boys," Daniel swore with quiet, absolute conviction. "Trust me, Emily."
